Re: Weapons used in the spanish civil war
I too think there are two Astra.
This is the Campogiro model 1913/16 We can see the hammer, the Astra don't have, the barrel is different too, the trigger system is more down in the Campogiro.

Another spanish pistol in war service
JO.LO.AR 1924 , 9 mm Largo
It could be loaded with one hand
* We can observe a curious stovepipe jam in 2:54

Hi, some Japanese Arisaka Type 30 arms were used in Spain during the civil war. They ended in Spanish hands via USSR. They may be from the Japanese inventory that had been captured by Russians in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese war.

Below an M1926 helmet, four common small arms of the Civil War: a Spanish 7mm M1893 Mauser rifle showing its straight bolt handle;
a 7.65 mm Ruby pistol made in Spain for a World War I French Army contract; a 7.63 mm Astra Model 900 copy of the Mauser C96 ‘broomhandle’
pistol; and the ubiquitous 9 mm Largo Astra Model 400, adopted by the Army as the M1921.

Re: Weapons used in the spanish civil war
The Republican Army was supplied with small batches of the soviet submachine gun PPD-34.
Many models of weapons arrived from the Soviet Union, but curiously very few submachine guns.
PPD-34 submachine guns that arrived in the Republican zone only had the standard magazine of thirty-five rounds.
The weight was 5 1/2 Kg.

Re: Weapons used in the spanish civil war
quick question: were any MG 34 in use with Legion Condor? Wikipedia says so, but I don‘t think its very likely for reasons of Wehrmacht secrecy regarding the MG 34 prewar.

Re: Weapons used in the spanish civil war
Not only Wikipedia, there are many books that mention the MG-34 as used or at least tested by the Condor Legion in the SCW. It is clear from documentary evidence that it was not provided to Spanish troops. There is always the possibility that it was used in very small numbers for some combat tests in "controlled environment" by the Germans, but AFAIK there is no documentary evidence or photo of the presence of the MG-34 in Spain in that period.

A Lewis gun in use during the filming of movie ' For whom the bell tolls'.
I also see very unlikely its widespread use in SCW.

That will depend on what you mean by widespread!von toma wrote:A Lewis gun in use during the filming of movie ' For whom the bell tolls'.

It was available in significant numbers, probably more than one thousand Lewis reached Spain (from Soviet and Polish stocks). And there is ample evidence (including photographs) of its use in the SCW.
So it's a very different case from that of the MG-34.

Do you happen to know what the docuemntary sources are for the information that Lewis guns were delivered to Spain from Poland? The only scrap I have is an unreferenced statement that 112 were sold to the 'Grimard' company for (according to the documentation) delivery to Haiti, which were 'probably' in fact delivered to the Republicans.probably more than one thousand Lewis reached Spain (from Soviet and Polish stocks).

Re: Weapons used in the spanish civil war
In my notes I have 400 Lewis sent by SEPEWE (Syndicat Exporti Przemyski Wejennego) arriving to Spain on 3 March 1937. IIRC, the source was Gerald Howson's Arms for Spain: the Untold Story of the Spanish Civil War, but I can't confirm that because I don't have the book now.
On the other hand, there is this online article: https://acami.es/wp-content/uploads/202 ... il-web.pdf
about light weapons sent by Poland to Spain during the SCW. The author is Lucas Molina Franco, a well-known, highly reputed researcher on weaponry of the SCW. It mentions that 412 Polish Lewis machine-guns were sent to Spain, together with 7 million 7,69 mm rounds for them.
This same author has just published a book about Polish weapons in the SCW: Polonia y el tráfico de armas en la Guerra Civil española. There is probably more information about the Polish Lewis there, but I have not read it.
Hope that helps.
Regards.
