According to the KTB of 298. ID:
On 19 Dec 1942, Szelinski (Kdr. 298. ID), the Ia, Ic and O1 left the Div.Gef.Stand in Malewanny to travel to Bogunoff, where 298. ID was to relocate. Contact was lost with Szelinski et al. and, with reconnaissance detecting a Soviet advance in the area where the officers were last known to be, it was apparently assumed that they were captured/killed. Therefore, Obstlt. Rolf Maempel, who had just led his Kampfgruppe to the area of the 298. ID Div.Gef.Stand, assumed command of the division on the same date.
The following day, 20 Dec 1942, the Korps ordered all of the division's regimental commanders to the Div.Gef.Stand. Obst. Herbert Michaelis (Kdr. GR 525), presumably the senior regimental commander, assumed command of the division from that date.
On 25 Dec 1942, Szelinski and the O1 returned to the division via aircraft and on the following day, 26 Dec 1942, Szelinski re-assumed command of the division. (Unfortunately, the KTB does not detail the events that occurred regarding Szelinksi et al. during their absence.)
On 06 Jan 1943, Szelinski departed the division, presumably placed in FR.

Thanks Todd
It´s really disarming+discouraging how data+dates from KTB differ from those from Dienstlaufbahnen.

Good morning!
I have Oberst Heinrich ECKHARDT as commander of Infanterie Regiment 38 from 06 February 1940 to 25 April 1943. So where's the mistake?

Caro Rossano,

I see two Obersten commanding the same infantry regiment, at the same period of time (February 1940 to December 1941): SZELINSKI from August 1939 to December 1941 and ECKHARDT from February 1940 to April 1943...

Kind regards,
