Rückkühler in a bunker
Hello All
I know this question is placed here before , but who has any information or photo's of this Rückkühler ?
Regards Jos

Re: Rückkühler in a bunker
Hi Jos,
A Rückkühler for 'air to air' cooling like in the L484 or a Rückkühler for 'water to air' like in a maschinenraum to cool the water in a generator?
I think I got at picture from you of 'water to air' Rückkühler but I don't have pictures of the other kind. Am interested as well

Thanks Morten
Love to see that picture , do you know if the Kriegsmarine used a other model then the Luftwaffe ??

Re: Rückkühler in a bunker
I don't think the Luftwaffe and the kriegsmarine used different kinds of ruckkuhler. I think it was a standard german thing. The one I have a picture of is the one for aircooling the engine for a generator. It looks like a lufthitzer but it's not.
The one for air to air cooling/heating used in the L484 is in my eyes the most interesting one. But I have No pictures og that one yet
To night i will be able to find the picture i my archive and I will post it.

Hi Jos,
Sorry for the late reply. The one on your drawing is the one I have a picture of. Don't no the source of the picture!
I don't know if it is specifically for naval use. But this is the one used to cool down the cooling water in an engine. Air from the outside of the bunker is pumped through a radiator where the water comming from the dieselengine goes through and is there by cooled down and recirculated back to the engine cooling it down.
The Rückkühler in the L484 had no water running through it. It was used to heat up the outside cold air with the warm air inside the bunker.

Re: Rückkühler in a bunker
Jos, that is a very interesting drawing! The Ruckkuhler as shown in the drawing, is in fact a heat exchanger. This is, IMO, a advanced design. Looking at the seperate reservoir for the cooling fluid, the pump, the suction line of that pump, including a check valve in the bottom to prevent the fluid flowing back in the reservoir, most centrifugal pumps are not self-priming. Good engineering and a good drawing.
Best regards,
Bertill.

@ Thanks Morten, yes they look the same , btw the photo is from the S 497 at Ile de Ree.
@ Bertill, thanks for the explination , I have found a other drawing with a Rückkühler from a M 219 and same source.

Re: Rückkühler in a bunker
The principle if the "Rüchkühler" is not that advanced.
It works on the base as a car radiator and air heater. You pump hot or cold water through a radiator and the passing air will be heated or cooled.
The drawings show a massive pipe system for the air even in the water pit there is a connection.
Last drawing is interesting because it also states "Kühlwasser", so big tanks with cooling water.
I am thinking that is has to do with the type of engine you use for the generator. So is it air cooled or water cooled ? Bigger diesel generators have a water system connected to the big water tanks. Cooling (of the water) is done by the volume.
Smaller generators have a radiator (like a car) with needs cold air to cool down the cooling water.
What also may play a part is where to we live ?
In a hotter more south region the summers may be to hot for a normal cooling process. So there is no cold air available to start with.

Re: Rückkühler in a bunker
Do you have more pictures of it, and in better resolution?and it's one of my pictures... Taken on september 2005.... !!
For us in "Hanstholm II" it is very interesting as we certainly had one - the bolts for it are still visible in the floor of the cooling water room.
Best regards

Is this a Rückkühler? It's inside the 118a hospital bunker of Wn 324H, Haamstede.
