He was born in Mülheim am Rhein, which was later incorporated into Köln. He grew up mostly in Essen and Steele bei Essen, where his father was a teacher and later Gymnasialdirektor.

The son born in 1924 was Waltfried Wirtz, who died in 2010.

According to the Fahrtbericht O.B. (18. Armee), Wirtz was still Kommandeur der 96. ID on 7 Dec 1943. Was his Führerreserve date pushed back from 1 Dec 1943 or was he still Kommandeur while in the FR?

I'm sorry, this was my mistake. I was excited to finally have something to contribute to the forum that I misread the years. I'll be more careful in the future.

According to the KTB of 96. Infanterie-Division, Wirtz took over the command of the division as Führer (from stellv. Führer Obst. Gottfried Weber) on 05 Aug 1943. On 07 Aug 1943, Wirtz was named Kommandeur.

Did this man lead the group Wirtz (wich was part of the 18th armee I believe) in the Netherlands in 1940? Then he was repsonsible for the taking of the islands of Tholen and Schouwen-Duiveland.

It think it’s the same guy. The Information I found was that the commander of Gruppe Wirtz around 15th of may was commanded by an Obest who was originally in charge of PiRgtSt413. Source: http://www.waroverholland.nl/index.php?page=tholen

Yes, it´s the same officer, but when he led his group (may 40) he was still cdr. of Pi.Rgt. 413
