Ersatz-Bataillon LSSAH

Post by Ebusitanus » 16 Oct 2017 08:41

Hello,
I am currently looking into the general history of the LSSAH and while I have managed to gather quite an amount of information about the various comabt units, I am missing some details about the Ersatz-Bataillon left in Lichterfelde during the war.

I am looking to find out who the various Bataillon commanders and possibly Company commanders of this Replacement Battalion during the war starting august 1939.

From Lehmann I have: 24/8/139

Kdr: SS-Stubaf. Bertling
1st Company: SS-Ostuf. Nothdurft
2nd Company: SS-Ostuf. Schiller
3rd Company: SS-Ostuf. Scholz
4th (MG) Company: SS-Ostuf. Hempel
Führer des Nachkommandos: SS-Hstuf. Stoppel

Thanks in advance

Thats what I thought. In the good LAH books I go through you get to be able to follow the command structures of the division company by company throughout the years. Yet the Ersatz und Ausbildungs Battalion back in Berlin has near to no research on it. This is a pitty since many frontline officers and NCOs would have been rotated to this unit one moment or another.

Records for the Ersatz-Bataillon LSSAH (Berlin) exist here:

Bundesarchiv Freiburg (Abteilung Militärarchiv) RS 4/1692.
Verbände und Einheiten der Feldformationen der Waffen-SS
German 1934-1945

September 1939 in Berlin-Lichterfelde – 5. Ersatzkompanie (Panzerspäh) unter [SS-]Hauptsturmführer Harry Jobst. [...] Anfang 1940 wurde die 5. Ersatzkompanie nach Ellwangen verlegt [...] Übrigens hieß der Kompaniechef der 5. Ersatzkompanie in Ellwangen Hauptsturmführer Reder oder Reeder.“

Great information

5th Ersatz Kompanie 11/09/39 under Harry Jobst
5th Ersatz Kompanie, Start 1940 under Reder

Harry Jobst
Its a pitty that in Charles Trang' Dictionnaire of the LSSAH there is no entry for this man allthough he certainly served with the unit. I found this:

00.07.1933 II./LSSAH Waffen-SS1
00.07.1941 1./SS-Artillerie-Regiment 2 Chef
00.12.1941 2./SS-Infanterie-Regiment "Deutschland" Chef
27.01.1942 II./SS-Infanterie-Regiment "Deutschland" Führer
00.01.1942 II./SS-Infanterie-Regiment "Deutschland" Kommandeur
00.10.1944 I./SS-Artillerie-Regiment 10 Kommandeur
00.04.1945 SS-Panzergrendier-Regiment 22 Kommandeur

Seems like he went straight from the Ersatz unit of the LAH to command in Das Reich and later the Frundsberg.

Reder o Reeder is also not to be found in Trang's work

What I do have found to move this on a bit is:

Klingemeier, Artur
Born 24 Feb 1913 Kummerfeld

Ustuf. 10./LSSAH in Mar 1935
Hstuf. Chef,6./LSSAH in Nov 39
Hstuf. z.b.V.,Pz.GR.2 in Jan 43
Stubaf. Kdr.SS-Pz.Gr.AuE.Btl.1 in Jun 44
Stubaf Begl.Kdo.d.Führers in Apr 45

There is also a Ernst Kleinert as being part in some fashion as Hstuf (Company commander?) in SS-Pz.Gr.AuE.Btl.1 on the 11/44

I struggled with Reder or Reeder too. Could be Walter Reder (SS-no. 58 074) who was an Ostuf with Totenkopf Infanterie Regiment 2 in May 1940 and a Hstuf in 11./TIR 1 in September 1941 according to Moore's Führerliste but I have no reference to him being with LAH.

Chef of the 5th Ers. Kp. (the so called "Panzerspäh Ersatzkompanie") of the Leibstandarte after Harry Jobst was Hst. Werner Rehder.
Rehder went with his Kp. April 12 1940 to Ellwangen, where the Kp. was renamed the 5. (Pz.Späh)/SS-Kradschützen Ers.Btl.
A 6th Ers.Kp. of the Leibstandarte had been established per January 11 1940 under Ost. Hugo Ullerich.
This Kp. was renamed 5th. Ers.Kp after the departure of the Pz.Späh Ers.Kp. per April 12 1940.

Thank you Bogo! :)

I got another one.

Stubaf. Friederich Beutler, who transfered in august 1944 to the SS-Pz.Gr.AuE.Btl.1 after having been wounded in Normandy

By July 1, 1940, the company chiefs under Stubaf. Sator were Hastuf. Hans Witt (1.), Hastuf. Ludwig Lamprecht (2.), Ostuf. Heinze (3.), Hastuf. Albrecht (Heinrich?) (4.) and Hastuf. Hugo Ullerich (5.).

The list of battalion commanders I have is Stubaf. Heinz Bertling (to early November 1939), Stubaf. Emil Sator (to October 1940), Hastuf. Kaspar König (by DEcember 1940), Stubaf. Karl-Joachim Praefcke (August 1941 to January 1942), Hastuf. Joachim Schiller (to March 1942), Stubaf. Wilhelm Mohnke (to September 1943) and Stubaf. Artur Klingemeier (to April 1945)

Apparently Lamprecht was a teacher in Bad Tölz somewhere between leaving the Ersatz Bataillon and October 2, 1941, when he replaced Böttcher as cdr. 2./AA LAH

“Lamprecht – the Taktiklehrer – had a Putzer (batman) who always wanted to open the door for his Hauptsturmführer and who always stood at the footboard of his car. I told him he should stop doing that. Lamprecht was too much a Theoretiker (theoriser). One day they lay behind the car and categorised the maps just like a tactical instructor. He could not wipe his own butt without his Putzer.”
- Karl (2./AA LAH)

This is in line with Meyer, who was very negative about him in "Grenadiere" (he referred to him as "L")

Here a photo of the Ersatz-Bataillon staff in Berlin-Lichterfelde in the spring of 1942.
SS-Sturmbannführer Mohnke still not recovered...
Cheers
