Transport (Kraftwagen-Kolonne) units in Turkey

Mates,

I made this new area to cover in detail the Transport unit sent to Turkey and those formed by Turkey during the war.

Due to the poor transport system through out the Empire (Rail and roads) moving troops and Supplies were made very hard, time consuming and hard on the men having to cover varst distances.

When the Germans and Austrians sent numbers of Truck companies into the Empire to help move these systems around.

Tosun gave us this on the Austrians

2'nd Lieutenant Adelbert Lederer was the first commander of all kuk motor vehicles formationen. and then Rittmeister von Seutter were appointed commander. Von Seutter was later appointed to his hometown, Major Knight Maximilian Ritter von Henriquez took over the command. A total of 43 officers, 918 noncommissioned officers and soldiers served on the Kraftwagen units.(Jung p.53)

The 2nd Army logistics support line had eight automobile kolonne, consisting of four German, three Austro-Hungarian, and one Turkish kolonne with 101 cars and trucks.(Mareşal Mustafa Fevzi Çakmak, Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nda Doğu Cephesi, Genel Kurmay Basımevi, Ankara, 2005, s.308.

(k.u.k. Autokolonne Nr 1 in Konya) one of the drivers was Josef Gabriel. Nr 1 had Praga GI model 1 PKW, 1 ammu car, 5 Fiat LKW per 2 tons, 2 Waf kamyon/2 tons Peter Jung, Die K.u.K Streitkräfte im ersten Wetkrieg 1914-Verlag Stöhr Wien 1995 2. Folge.

k.u.k. Autokolonne Türkei Nr 5,9, 10) one of the crew was korporal Franz Schilberg fron vienna .Nr. 10 had 1 Puch PKW, 1 Puch ammu wagon, 20 Praga kamyon LKW/3 tons.

The trucks ordered from Austria for the Hijaz expeditionary forces arrived in Istanbul at the beginning of 1917. Under the command of Captain Joseph Jobb, there was also a training platoon to train turkish drivers. 3 motor vehicle colonne was established with incoming cars. Each arm had a passenger car PKW , a material truck (Rüstfahrzeug) and 14 trucks. However, the dispatch of these vehicles to Hejaz was later abandoned and in March 1917 they were sent to Mosul under the order of the 6th Army.

More on the Germans will follow

Mates,

Now we can say there were at lest Ten companies of Austrian Transport in Turkey during 1917-18 spread all over the empire.

German companies arrived in two phases call Pascha 1 and Pascha 2

Pascha 1 units were all started with 500, while

Pascha 2 units started with 700

From what I can gather by 1918 German units were around these areas;

Leitung des Deutschen Kraftfahrwesens in der Türkei in Konstantinopel
Personalnachschubstelle Konstantinopel
Kraftwagenpark Konstantinopel
Erzkolonne A in Kutahia
Erzkolonne B in Arghana-Maden
Erzkolonne C in Balia-Bergwerke
Ernährungskolonne in Konia (KWK 508 )
Ernährungskolonne in Konia (KWK 509a)
Kraftwagenkolonne 513 in Hassan-Beyli

Kdr. d. Kraftwagen Irak (früher K.d.K. 6. osmanische Armee) in Mosul
Kraftwagenkolonne 501 in Tscham-Alan
Kraftwagenkolonne 508a in Mosul
Kraftwagenkolonne 508b in Tell-Helif
Kraftwagenkolonne 509b in Nisibin

Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 712 in Karak
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 713 in Aman
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 715 in Damaskus
Armee-Kraftwagenstaffel 731 in Damaskus
Armee-Kraftwagenpark 751 in Damaskus
Kraftfahr-Ersatzabteilung F in Damaskus
Kraftwagenkolonne 502 in Es Salt
Kraftwagenkolonne 503 in Rajak
Kraftwagenpark 504 in Mouslemije

Kdr. der Kraftwagen Palästina (former K.d.K. der 8. osmanischen Armee) in Nablus
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 701 in Tul Kerim
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 702 in Nablus
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 704 in Nazareth
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 705 in Nablus
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 706 in Besan
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 707 in Huwara
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 708 in Sebastije
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 709 in Besan
Armee-Kraftwagenkolonne 711 in Nazareth

Kraftwagenkolonne 506 in Tul Kerim
Kraftwagenkolonne 507 in Nablus
Kraftwagenkolonne 515 in Sebastije
Kraftwagenpark 505 in Tiberias

Some columns were later divided. Thus column 512 became column 511 on June 4, 1918 and column 508b on June 4, 1918.
The column 801 was destined for the Caucasus.

Then I found:
Kraftfahr-Sonderformation 500 in Bozanti
Kraftwagenkolonne 513 in Amanus
Kraftwagenkolonne 512
Kraftwagenkolonne 516
Erzkolonne D
Erzkolonne E
The above mentioned ore columns A-C and the last mentioned columns D and E were also called motor vehicle columns A-D.

An Ottoman Orbat shows these units with the 15th Corps in Galica

115th MT Co

6Co/14th Train Bn 7Co/3rd Train Bn 5Co/20th Train Bn 2Co/15th Train Bn

The 20th Corps from British Intell reports shows

3rd Corps shows

3rd Transport Bn (at Gallipoli) 1915

163rd SAA 4th, 20th, 141st and 180th MT Columns (1918)

7th Army (July 1918)

2nd MT Column (possibly KUK)

Shown in the 16th Div (July 1918)

Mates,

From what I can find there was No transport system pre war, or at lest limited. The Army was surpose to make it up during operations, (see handbook of the Turkish Army dated 1916 page 96) .

While each Corps was to have a Train with a Company for each Division in that Corps, in pratice that was not always to case, No peace time Ammo Columns were formed and had to formed during the war. Companies had to draw there animals from local sourses. While this could at times be done as the war went on that became harder and harder.

By 1916 there were at lest 10 Train Bn's each of three companies and three Bn's each of two companies and two inderpendent companies. Or from 38 companies to 52 companies. Making sure each Division had one Train Company.

During 1916 the handbook claims the formation on what they call Small Arms or SAA units to help move ammo. I have noticed these units, but give little details on there formations. eg how many and how they were made up?

The Germans took over the system of supplies they great improved the system.

That with Railway Sondercommandos greatly help move supplies were the MT Co took over to move to the Armies.

But we still have no seen what Ottoman MT Companies were formed after 1916 as the Handbook ends then. Were the SAA Companies also MT or other transport. So many questions.

My article published on "Düşünce ve Tarih Aylık Tarih Dergisi, sayı: 43, Nisan 2018 " (Ideas and History, Monthly History magazine, Nr 43, April, 2018,AVUSTURYA MACARİSTAN ULAŞTIRMA BİRLİKLERİNİN TÜRK CEPHELERİNDEKİ FAALİYETLERİ, "ACTIVITIES OF AUSTRIA HUNGARIAN TRANSPORTATION UNION'S AT TURKISH FRONTS"
In turkish for our turkish members

30.5luk havanları 100 at gücünde kamyonlar çekiyordu.

Gerçekten Avusturyalılar her fırsattan istifade edip eğlenmeyi iyi biliyorlardı.

Mate,

It was not possible to import and supply ammunition and military equipment from outside the country since there was no contact with Germany or rather our allies in all periods of the Dardanelles Wars. Our army had to manage with existing stocks in hand. This in particular required many restrictions on artillery shots. The Germans decided to eliminate Serbia and pave the way to the Balkans, appreciating that if the Dardanelles falls, the war will result against them. On September 6, 1915, they reached a goal with a German and Austro-Hungarian army under the command of German General Mackenzen in a military alliance with Bulgaria. With the opening of the Serbian road in November, the already long-awaited German artillery ammunition and supplies reached the 5th Army. This was followed by artillery battalions of the Austrian Hungarian Army. These were the 24 Sk Skoda Motor Mortar Coil No. 9. (K.u.k. 24 cm. Motormörser-Batterie Nr 9) and the 36 Sk Skoda Howitzer Battery 36 (K.u.K 15 cm- Haubitzebatterie Nr 36).

The first shipment of motor mortars was carried out on October 22, 1915 from Vienna. Four officers and 80 soldiers were guards for this shipment. On 15 November 1915, the commander of the battery, Captain Barber, came to Uzunköprü with a group of one hundred and eighty-three soldiers. At Uzunköprü, the ball pieces were removed from the crates and reassembled for a week. The battery moved to Matikdere (Manikdere) on the Gallipoli Peninsula, 160/170 kilometers away, with four guns, seven cars and 120 terrain cars.

Lieutenant Höpflinger and Filipp took over the transport of mortars to the front. The difficult part was that the motorized mortars had to cover the 160 km long road to the front. Everything was bound to go unseen to enemy planes that constantly scanned the area. The road along the Gulf of Saros was constantly monitored by British warships and transported at night. However, the Havanlar arrived at the front three and a half days after they had departed from Uzunköprü. This transportation was a brilliant achievement considering the very deserted condition of the whole road.

“Our regiment would not temporarily march and would be the guardian of the Eksamil district until the motor cannons from Austria reached the war front. It was a flurry. Everybody was thinking about how these balls could cross the rotten bridge in Eksamil. One night until the morning with great engine noise we had waited for these balls to pass. After seeing these vehicles with our eyes, we decided that the entente armies could no longer shelter on the Gallipoli front ”.

The cannons of the Motorized Mortar Battery Number 9, which came to the aid of the Çanakkale Front, were being pulled with a motor vehicle in two parts: “upper barrel, bottom barrel with bed yatak. The M9 and M12 trucks were used as the towing vehicle (Mörserzugwagen).

The company that produces Austro-Daimler Mörserzugwagen M 12 Trucks, which is engaged in the Canakkale Front and the defense of the Gulf of Izmir, attracts the Austrian Hungary mortars “Österreichische Daimler Motoren Commanditgesellschaft Bierenz Fischer u. Co "German" Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft "patents was established on 11.8.1899. For the first time in 1912 to draw mortars mortars 100 HP, 6 cylinders, 12 tons of M12 Mörserzugwagen produced. In fact, these trucks produced the famous Skoda 30.5 mortar. The M12s were able to pull 30 tons of cargo, and they were named as “Hunderter ından because they were 100 horsepower. In 1914 military production was increased. force was increased to 45 tons and put into service as C-Zug M12 / 16. The activities of these trucks on the Turkish fronts were written by Karl Pataky:

“World War II created the opportunity for Austria to demonstrate the technical and industrial development of Hungary. An extremely important role has certainly played in the automobile industry. Our motor mortars have been in service of the allied Turkish Army for only one year. Today we can say with all clarity that the cannons were brilliant in Asian soil. This success was achieved not only by accurate shots but also by the good handling and superior performance of Austro-Daimler-Zugwagen motor vehicles. If we approach this performance efficiency from two points, we understand better. Firstly, it is the presence of well-trained personnel in terms of both driving and auto repair, and the second is the activities of auto personnel in attracting balls. In the latter case, land difficulties immediately come to mind. The use of motor vehicles as transport vehicles in the Asian lands of Turks has created a permanent and new military system in addition to railway transportation. The Baghdad railway is disconnected, as is known in many places. The completion of the line as soon as possible is essential for world peace. Of course, the completion of the line as soon as possible will facilitate the flow of materials and necessities to the Turks fighting in many scenes of the east. Austro-Daimlerwerke motor vehicles The experience of using Austro-Daimler-Zugwagens for shooting heavy mortar batteries was first made in February 1913. Archduke Leopold Salvator 1905 in Austria

In 1996, it obtained a patent on 4-wheel drive. The Skoda factory in Pilsen produced the first front model. In 1905, with the patent of the Archduke, the first Austro-Daimler armored car started to be produced. 30.5 mortars attracted 100 horsepower trucks. The most important feature of motor vehicles is that the coating is armored. The Gallipoli front was an important test site for them. The trucks showed very good maneuverability both on the Gallipoli front and on Asian soil, especially on sandy, salty, rough terrain. In addition to the performance of the trucks, cranes and caterpillars came into play and were able to haul many tons of cannons and artillery in all kinds of difficult terrain. Like the representation of our motor vehicles, there was another important task that was not underestimated in the eyes of the Orient. The impact of the powerful Austo-Daimler motor vehicles of our mortar batteries was not erased from the public's mind. The effect of the heavy battery on the public in the courtyard of the Turkish Ministry of War
We can show. The battery was ready with all the steps. Enver Pasha inspected them. He praised the battery's combat efficiency. Heavy motor vehicles, attracting the cannons in the streets of Istanbul and Pera (Istiklal) Street with great hum, aroused great admiration and confidence in the impact of our guns. A similar and even more politically significant success of the same battery took place in the official parade in Izmir. Most of the Levantines living in Izmir were citizens of the Entente. The priority here was the greatest impact on them. The military power of the Monarchy was closely demonstrated by the “ad oculos sayesinde thanks to the heavy-duty high-impact batteries. Our artillery, which gained worldwide fame, has fallen on a much more important political mission besides the military missions in the East. It is certain that; The technical association k.u.k was very talented. They have had a moral impact not only on Turkish officials but also on large masses of people. On this solid foundation, further cooperation will be established with our Turkish ally in the future. ”

With an order from the enemy's desertion from Çanakkale, the 9-cm 24-cm mortar battery was sent from Gallipoli to Izmir for coastal defense. On June 28, 1916, the battery was loaded onto the ship in Istanbul and moved to Bandırma. A weight approaching 600 tons was delivered to Menemen by rail in five batches of 120 tons. However, the road problem appeared. There was no way to lift the 600-ton battery in the area. For this reason, the 17th Corps Commander Trommel Pasha sent eight hundred soldiers to correct the roads so that the battery could pass. Finally, the battery reached İzmir Karşıyaka (Kordelio, Peraia). Knowing Capt. Kodar von Thurnwerth's abilities, Trommer Pasha made him the commander of coastal defense batteries up to Foça. An area of 167 kilometers was defended by seventeen batteries.

An unspecified 24-hour Havan Batteries top-wheeler driver, with a letter titled “Under the Order of Muzaffer Hilâlin or, describes his movements from Istanbul and the ones who went through the road with great sincerity.
“Beautiful May Day under the deep blue sky k.u.k. Motor vehicles and cannons belonging to the 24 mortar battery were quickly loaded onto the elegant illy Lilly Rickmeß ”steamer of Deutsche Lloyd, registered in the port of Bremen to Bandırma. Haydarpaşa Port was able to cope with all the maritime traffic in time of peace with its availability and large port facilities. However, a second port was needed due to the war. Köprübaşı, which opened to Asia Minor, became the port of Bandırma. Bandırma port facilities are certainly at a level that can allow a very busy traffic. When we arrived in Bandirma, a Turkish Engineering Company was given to our company. Mortars that were lowered from the ferry were lined up along the line at the station. The trucks took their places behind them. Thanks to the large loading ramp at the station, cannons, cars and trucks were quickly loaded onto platform wagons (borderless wagons). Officers and a number of privates were placed in two shaded passenger cars loaded in the anterior borderless wagon. Our train was already on the station. The locomotive moved slowly. Bandırma's European station, silent and neat Turkish houses, the blue Sea of Marmara, the friendly waving “Lilly Rickmeß” crew behind the hills rising slightly behind.

About two hours later, on our right, the Marmara Lake (Manyas lake), half-salty, half-swampy, covered with large reeds, where people could easily disappear, shone like a mirror.
Mosquitoes accompanied us on this challenging journey. We were very uncomfortable with them. Due to the increased temperature, the shirts and caps were removed. At a considerable speed, our train started to drive through the hills of Misya, which were full of sharp edges. Initial cheerfulness was replaced by fatigue and burnout. The dry and hot weather made us all weary. In addition, the colorless desolation of the land bored us. In the burned fields stretching for miles, only stone soil remained. There were no settlements in the dried, roasted plains. The train sometimes passed a few poor villages. These villages were adjacent to each other, at least a house on the flat roofs of straw, hay or grass covered huts, or rather made of clay (adobe) cave buildings were. In front of these poor houses, sometimes children were seen waiting with leather overalls. At first we thought they were waiting to give us water. However, even a German sergeant explained why they were waiting to extinguish a fire that could arise from a spark from the locomotive. Our train is nowhere to stop Çatalça and He passed through Sultanşehir. We stopped for half an hour to get water to locomotive in Balıkesir. Throughout the journey, we felt the refreshing air blowing here because of the warmth. The train line from Balıkesir was divided into two. Our train headed south-west to a mountainous region. Kiresun (?), Soma and Kirgatsche (?) Were the major stations of the line. After the mill, the train line progressed along a bed of tea, with occasional puddles. We passed through small green olive trees and tree-like cultures. On the cultivated land, the blades of Western European wind engines rotate and provide life water to fertile soil. The facilities that do not fit this true Oriental life and remind us of the homeland, different groups of people left a very strange impression on me as Avrupa Western Europe conquers Anatolia ”. Covered with laurel branches, Hilal is no longer a sign of a blindly conservative religious state, a closed world, a culture, but a reliable society that has achieved military and economic successes. I experienced one example of our unity in our motorized journey after the last stop of our train journey in Akhisar. Akhisar, which is a big city, hit the houses with all its redness. On both of our locomotives there was a sign indicating the place of production in Turkish letters “Magdeburg-Buchau”. The steam of the locomotives licked the new station building, built according to German plans. Meanwhile, our cargo was unloaded from the train within two hours with the help of custom made cranes and made ready for movement along the train line. The battery crew and auxiliary Turks checked the left and right of the cannons and vehicles to see if there was any damage, and they tried to repair them immediately if there were minor damages. There was no damage. There was a layer of dust and sand that needed to be cleaned an inch thick.

The weather went dark quickly. Most of the Austrian Crew and the Turkish soldiers of the Turkish Intelligence Division were taken to an empty large house where they would spend the night. The ground floor of the house was a very spacious room. Straw or straw was laid on the ground. over a year since Sergeant who served in Turkey and the Turks who originally greeted us Berliners homeland procedure. Before going to bed, he made a big mosquito net by nailing two big bags he found from somewhere and a blanket he would cover at night by means of a round stone he took from the hearth. The Turks watched him with a grin. We realized how right he was after our bloody struggle with the six-legged owners of our mattress during the night. We have learned that we have to protect our blankets from these “escapers.. In the end, we were tired of this long and boring journey, we passed from this insect's compulsory checkpoint, ignoring stings, bites and itches, and dived into a deep sleep. Because the treble up pipe was given at 05:00 in the morning.
So I started my first truck journey in Asia Minor. The whole group was divided into two groups. I was in the first group. Without exception, all the cars worked, never deteriorated. We're on the road. It was a good roadway that disappeared. The road was full of curves, bends, turns, slopes and descents. Along this way, we had the opportunity to practice driver training. In all vehicles, as previously ordered, there were one or two Turkish driver candidates to be trained as drivers.

He is certainly not a negative student in Turkish mechanics and a strange man. Uneducated communities, like everywhere else, cannot easily break from the old traditions in mechanics. For example, I saw two Turkish peasants passing through Akhisar. They were cutting wood from a big log. The tools they used were probably used a thousand years ago, and the cutting process took half a day. But under the direction of a good manager, these places can certainly be improved. Our Turks are looking at the engines of the vehicles as if they were alive. With the Eastern imagination they study the great technical characteristics of motor vehicles. What they did at the steering and motor courses was not bad at all and it was generally accepted that they were incurable pragmatic. Almost every Turkish driver saw his vehicle as a different and high species and acted accordingly. And very rarely, one of them came out and was attached to his vehicle with the love of “punishment bir. Taxis on the Albanian stony roads of Istanbul cannot prove any contrary to my words. Because these drivers are either Greek or Armenian. They are dangerous drivers who want to earn three or five cents more tip outside the taxi fare.

From outside Akhisar, we first crossed the junction of the Baghdad railway. Two lines run from this junction and reunite with the main line in Uşak, 200 kilometers to the east. In this way, I replaced my student with Ibrahim Boschak, the Corporal of the Ottoman Army, in Edirne. He went behind the wheel. The road around here was tight and good, although a bit narrow in hilly places. Abraham had enough pre-training, speaks broken German but understood well. For this reason, my driving school instructor training was limited to clutch, upshifting, downshifting, and could not go further than qualifying it. The motorized vehicles were driven at a speed of 18 kilometers and the wheel duck legs that were able to move on the sand had been removed from the wheels of the cannons before, and although the road was good and set, the cannons were far behind.
A long and very curved road, explaining how to reduce the engine, Ibrahim hurriedly began to look left and right. And he pointed to some kind of cloud on a hill ahead. A sense of danger, I immediately moved to the wheel by replacing Abraham. We immediately put on our dust glasses. The cloud approached us and the car in front disappeared into the cloud. Cloud grains were hitting the engine cover, headlights and even our glasses with metallic noises. The cloud consisted of tens of thousands of locusts. Thus I became familiar with the Egyptian Disaster. The speed of the vehicles was reduced immediately. We continued on our way slowly by chewing grasshoppers one foot length thick. Some grasshoppers had entered the shirts, some had stuck to our bare skin.

We were naked because we took off the shirts because of the hot. The prickly feet of grasshoppers made our bodies itch, tickling. One of these creatures even went under my nose and scouted. Abraham saved me from this trouble. Now I understand Abraham to give up the wheel immediately and give it to me. Because it was impossible to drive in a thick layer of smoke covering our heads for seconds. We drove on tens of thousands of grasshoppers lying on the ground in about 40 seconds. Our wheels have destroyed countless grasshoppers. Suddenly the engine trembled and stopped. I pulled the car to the right on a wide side of the road, I found the grasshopper that caused the engine to suffocate.

Taking advantage of this gap, we cleared all parts of the vehicles from the headlights, engine, radiator and grasshoppers. The soldiers sitting in the truck vault were laughing and laughing into their friends after us. After that, our car never broke down again and worked hard all year round.

Then we reached Manisa, the largest city of Saruhan province. Manisa was an important city, mostly inhabited by Greeks. There were many Jews. The city was spread to the foothills of Manisa (Spil) Mountain. There were no multi-storey buildings in the city. We were attracted attention that we could buy good quality tobacco in Manisa. We also recommend the famous “Egmegg Manisa” Manisa bread (the famous bagel bread), which is a sweet food. Since I learned to negotiate with Armenian merchants, I was content to buy tobacco. We arrived in Manisa in the afternoon. We spent the night at the castle. At 05:00 in the morning, the last day of our voyage, which will take us to Izmir via Menemen without any accident on winding roads, started. Rather, we passed a villa site full of figs and olive trees where British and French Levantine merchants lived. At the end of 14 days we had very interesting days and reached the sea Foca.

In Foça, 24 mortars were reassembled and 24 shots were made for trial. Our 15-howitzer battery, located on the opposite shore of Izmir Bay, had dismantled the British from Kösten Island this spring. The reason we came was to prevent a new attack from the enemy into the bay. Many Turkish artillery soldiers were also trained. Then we gathered again, after taking all necessary protection measures, we reached our Haydarpaşa station on the Bosphorus by taking our vehicles or train. We spent 14 days in Istanbul until the mission sent us to the Romanian Front. ”

The vulgar and proud Germans as well as Austro-Hungarians are “gemütlich”; So they were more fond of their pleasure. In his memoirs, German Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel Hans Guhr, who served as the Division commander in the Turkish army, recalls: “They brought a small band and a Gypsy orchestra, which was a joy. We were almost thirsty for music in the desert. Indeed, the Austro-Hungarians were a good soldier, but they were delighted ... We came to Diyarbakır on 12 July 1917. Rising above the gloomy basalt rocks, we saw the massive silhouette of this respectful old city on the horizon, from far away. We needed a lot of rest and rest for a long time in the burning heat. In the evening we went to the truck arm of the Austrians k.u.k deployed here. Weapons friends, whom we have not met before, greeted us sincerely and offered the princes a worthy treat. Indianerschlegel, Häuptlsalat (bellied lettuce), Kaiserschmarren (raisin dumpling) and ice-cold beer have long been absent and are therefore twice as delightful. Captain Tiergaertner, Lieutenant Zratt, and Albrecht almost competed with each other to make us forget our difficult journey. The evening in Diyarbakir was cheerful and fun. Well-chosen dishes, flowing champagne like water, sparkling beer and cheerful music contribute a lot

I was not surprised when Captain Tiergaertner found out that the Austrian delegations in the East had tableware for large banquets and that the expenses were, of course, covered by the state safe. How different this was from us (Germans)! On the morning of July 16, 1917, we arrived at the Baghdad station in Aleppo and settled in the German Army House there. Life in this “white” city was very lively. In the evening the mobility peaks were between 17-19 hours. In a local park, a local orchestra of Viennese women was working, and the most popular song was “Glücklich ist das Maedchen, das noch nichts von der Liebe weiss mel (the girl who never met love was lucky).

Indeed, the Austrians knew how to enjoy every opportunity. The following letter is a good example of this. The Laibach German School Graduated Girls' Association sent a Christmas package in four large boxes on November 27, 1916 to the kol Kraftwagen Kolonne Türkei 4 ”shipping arm in Diyarbakır. On March 16, 1917, the school received a reply letter from Lieutenant Schallgruber. The letter said: “The gifts we received was a big surprise for Austrian soldiers. In this way, we had a great happiness on March 5, 1917. It brought us the joy of Christmas from the homeland. We learned a long time ago that a big Christmas package came to our last train station. Due to the rainy season it was not possible to go and get. Even the camels could not go comfortable in that air. We had to wait. When the shipment arrived recently, it was better than we expected, both because of the abundance and the quality of the gifts in the boxes. I would like to emphasize the thanks given to the care and effort in packaging. Because of the extremely robust packaging, none of the gifts we have ever received from the homeland have been as solid as those packages you have sent. Despite a long and demanding shipment, nothing has been lost inside the packages.

Laibach and the Neumarket German School Alumni Associations are grateful for the sincere love of their young daughters and wives for the Austrian soldiers. We also shared the gifts you sent with our officers and private friends from other units. The Turks and some German friends in our union also benefited. We held a celebration with our small orchestra in the shed that we used as a refectory. It was an unforgettable day for all Turks, Germans and Austrians. Despite the conditions in which our country is in this day, we appreciate the difficulty of preparing such a big shipment and the great effort and sacrifice made. I would like to express my warmest and sincere gratitude to all the officers and members of the esteemed lady and all the esteemed group members. We have collected 17 Turkish Lira (180 Kroner) among us, please do not accept this as a response to the gifts you send, share this money between Laibach, Neumarktl Groups, the Austrian Red Cross, and accept it as our helpless help. We also send a page signed by some of our friends as a souvenir. ”
