US 8in Disappearing Gun

This past week I decided to do something different. I had always
liked the complicated mechanical design of the Disappearing Guns
so I modeled one. This is one of the more simple one - US 8" used for coastal
defense (qty 9 of this version built). I think I might 3D print it in 1/16th scale
and will post build when I get to it. Regards

The official nomenclature for this is an "8 inch Gun M1888 on Disappearing Carriage LF M1894"

It is a truly magnificient drawing. The only change I would suggest is that all pictures I have seen of the mount in service has a cover over the traverse roller bearings which the drawing shows as exposed.

Hi - Thanks much and yes, there are some little bits here and there left to go. I actually removed the cover
to show the rollers. I still have to work out how the cross head mechanisms for this piece
that are part of the elevation related parts work as well. I have a temporary solution fielded (haha)
that agrees with a profile drawing but has to be a bit refined. I want the model to retract and pivot just like the
real deal. I also have a 16" version in-work that is 2.5/3 times the size of the 8" but thought the 8" would be
something I could print quicker. I am waiting for some new water soluable resin that is soy bean based to try and
use for the print. Regards

Just one more slight correction. The Chief Of Coast Artillery reported that 26 of the various marks of M 1894 carriages were constructed and emplaced.

I see that you are doing the 16 inch M1895 on M 1912 carriage. I prefer the 16 inch M 1919 on 1917 dc carriage.

At present, I am doing 9 different disappearing guns (most are 12" and 14" variants as I like the 14" stuff myself).
I also did a few of the 12" coastal mortars. The 16" M1919 in DC configuration is impressive and I do plan to do that
one someday just don't know when I will get to it.

Hi - to create the model, I used the manual titled "Mounting, Using, and Caring for 8-Inch Disappearing Carriages, L.F., Model of 1894" and some photos I have from Morgan Engineering who had built them. You are probably right that more were built as the qty I stated only came from the factory photo indicating 9 which could have been the initial contract/order. Regards

I too have been building US coast artillery weapons for some time. However I have neither the skills nor equipment for 3 d construction so I build the old fashioned way with wood, steep tubing, and plastic card stock. Below are some of my builds. All are 1/76 scale.

very nice indeed - thanks for sharing. I am finishing up the 12" M1908 this week (old and ugly but cool looking) maybe and I have been working on the 14" MKIII (M 1920) for awhile. The gun, carriage, trucks and bolsters are just about done but I am holding out for more details on the engine compressor unit up front in order to finish. Regards

I always liked the 12 inch M1908. Only 24 built but 12 of them fired in war in the Philippines.
