Greetings,

I am in need of some help with a small translation.

Namely i am trying to decipher what do the letters next to the numbers represent on this picture i have uploaded.

It looks like a description of armament of a fortress/battery with the number of guns..

for example

2 "30?" Haubitzen and so on

But what is the lettering/meaning behind the 30 number or behind all the other numbers(two digits) caliber?, number of men?, ammo count?




If someone could shed some light on it i would be grateful.

Hi Lohi,

I believe it´s "W" and stands for "wagon" which were needed for the transport of this armament.
Means eg.:
"1 Stück- 48 W- Marine Kanone" = 1 piece Naval gun in 48 wagons.

That might be a plausible explanation when we take a look onto those things.

Hi,
Looks like a really ancient list! I think its "PF" for pfünd.
Earlier (<1860's) Austrian guns used the "pfünd" notation instead of centimeters. The values in your list (48, 30, 12 etc) match with the regular calibers for heavy guns in these days.

Some 'translations' from 'pfünd to cm I've come across:
6pf =9cm
12pf=12cm
24pf=15cm

Thanky you all for the replies, the document(i do not have it myself) is thought to be from around 1864(not confirmed). I was asked if i could shed some light on what could it be exactly.

At first it seemed to me that it had to do with the caliber of the guns itself the way it is written but since i have never seen those kinds of marks i tought better to ask then to guess.

I'll try to see if i can get more information about it to maybe put it in some sort of a context that will allow easier decription of it.
