#1

Post by Wilfried Abenaschon » 23 Jan 2003, 01:14

[Several threads dealing with "Cross of Iron" soundtrack have been merged by the music section host, Ivan Ž.]

Hello everybody!

At the start of a movie Cross of Iron with James Coburn there is a song hummed by some children...

Could anybody give me its title?

Willab :)

It's actually an old German children's song so to say called "Hänschen klein". It has nothing to do with WW2.

Hi!
Thank you very much for this answer!...
But in this movie, it seems that there is a mixture of two songs... What could be the second one (instrumental)?
Hope to get an answer on this difficult one...

'Hänschen klein' (Little John) was written by Franz Wiedemann during the 19th century. It's a folk song relating to 'Little John', a young boy, going out alone into the great wide world.

The full lyrics can be viewed on the following website:

If I recall correctly, the opening music of "Cross of Iron" is a combination of a German children's song (name unknown to me) and “Horst-Wessel-Lied” [There's no "Horst-Wessel-Lied" in this movie. I. Ž.]

Edit: the name of the children’s song in the opening music is “Hänschen klein.” Here are the lyrics and melody:

Wow, thanks for the Hänschen klein info. I just saw Cross of Iron and was about to ask that too. But do you know where I can find a Real Audio or MP3 file of it? And a translation of the song, I want to know what those little kids are singing.

Okay, so it's about a traveller who returns home after journeying. But what does this have to do with the movie? Was it taught to Hitler Jugend kids (since 'Hans' from the song can be a good analogy of a soldier) or was it just because it was a German's children song (it was written in the 19th century)? Or a bit of both?

Another of the songs sang in this movie is:

"Im Feldquartier auf hartem Stein" which is the one the platoon starts singing as another soldier plays it on Steiners harmonica.

Help! Songs from "Cross of Iron"

#12

Post by G. Trifkovic » 10 Nov 2004, 04:57

Hi everybody, two questions about two songs from the great Peckinpahs´s war movie:

1.What´s the name of the title song/march and especially
2. the name of the song they sing in the bunker when celebrating lt. Meier´s birthday (not the birthday song, but the other one,at the very end of the scene) ?

Cheers,

Gaius

I dont remember wich song they are singing on his birthday. I havent seen it for a long time eventhough I have a copy among my other movies.

These songs features the soundtrack of the movie:

1. Steiner's Theme
2. Main Title
3. Mikael
4. Steiner's Report
5. Captain Stransky
6. Mikael's Death
7. The Terrace
8. Memories And Hallucinations
9. Eva
10. Return To The Front
11. I Hate All Officers
12. The Bridge House
13. The Massacre Ernest Gold
14. Last Confrontation
15. Finale And End Credits

Do any of you have the main song?

C. Hoff
