Is someone familiar with the details about Johannes Rauch, formerly from the Einsatzkommando Zwolle (Holland) and probably extradited by the Dutch to Yugoslavia?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Ansata,

Your list of "Tortured to death, killed, executed and murdered in Yugoslavia" looks like an on-line search of deaths in captivity direct from the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge website.

A similar number of names can be found if searching for those who died in French and Polish captivity. Also in Britain many Germans died after WW2 but I would suggest they were not victims of torture or murder.

Do you have any other information on these men such as Regiment/unit etc. and/or any sources that would indicate they were infact tortured to death, killed, executed and murdered.

Best regards

"Tortured to Death, Killed, Executed and Murdered in Yugoslavia"
If you added "Starved to Death, Died of Disease and Other Illnesses" to this list it would number in the thousands or tens of thousands. But given my familiarity with the postwar U.N. War Crimes material, I do not know how you can identify who expired to which cause. That being the case, you are then right back to a large figure entitled "Total Wehrmacht Deaths While in Yugoslav Captivity". The Serbs in Belgrade sure as hell aren't going to help! Besides, I am not sure postwar Yugoslav camp archives even exist anymore.

Larry, I agree totally.
However Davids original post was War Crimes TRIALS of German Officials and I am trying to get back on topic. The names listed may be useful if they could be cross-checked with data from the US and British archives even if to establish that the men were even suspected of being war criminals.
I've visited the London Archives and seen files including Wanted Lists issued by the Yugoslavs. Almost everyone is listed as having committed mass murder.
Another file contained the names of over 150 men who were extradited by the British to Yugoslavia between Feb 1946 and Dec 1947. Many of these men are the more well known figures (e.g. Von Bothmer, Fiebig, Josten) and in most cases they were tried, found guilty and executed. Others such as Dehm were tried, imprisoned and released as early as 1953.
This is what I call war crimes trials (whether justified or not - they happened).

Hi Researcher,

Good work on your part. All I can offer from the U.S. end is that I did review the U.S. Department of State records in RG 59 (General Records) and RG 80 (Records of Embassies and Consulates) covering 1945-48 at NARA WashDC back some 25 years ago. Both the Belgrade Embassy and the Zagreb Consulate compiled voluminous files on the Yugoslav war crimes trials and related subjects and this information is available there. Some of the information came from open press sources while the other 40% or so came from private, confidential sources. The embassy and consulate also acted to forward classified intelligence information to Washington, confidential reports from the International Red Cross reps in Yugoslavia who were trying to monitor the situation, intelligence provided by other country's embassies and consulates, etc. It's a rich source of information for anyone trying to get to the bottom of what was going on there regarding the Axis prisoners in custody. One file in particular that interested me dealt with the so-called Communist Youth Brigades that were ordered to run amok all over the country in 1945-46 to terrorize and liquidate wartime collaborators wherever found. The file was full of very chilling first person accounts of many very grisly events.

It would be interesting to know what definition of "torture" the compilers of the list were using. Today's definition, where a frown or a harshly raised voice constitutes "torture", or the definition of 60 and more years ago that involved pliers, rusty spoons, hot irons, car batteries and buckets of water, drills, etc. A prisoner beaten to death was kind of in the middle when the old definition is used; a cruel and painful death but not really "torture".

An earlier post on this tread stated:

Leutnant Gustav Heufing
7. SS-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"
death sentence by shooting 05.12.1949 in Belgrad
confirmation of the sentence 26.12.1949

The correct last name should be Hüfing. He returned to Germany after the war but I do not know when. I'm looking for any information about Hüfing: particularly when and where captured, date and place of trial, sentencing history, date of repatriation to Germany.

Gustav Hüfing - Oberleutnant
Birth: 31.12.1894
Death: 24.07.1958

Thank you,
Patrick

Hello Patrick,

I have looked up my books and I have found a few things about Hüfing (POW-number 1540).

From Böhme's Die deutschen Kriegsgefangenen in Jugoslawien, Bd. I/2, p. 149-150, in an excerpt by the memoirs of GM Gerhard Henke – who was tried along with Hüfing – it is stated that the trial took place "in early December" [anfang Dezember] in the city of Vršac (Werschetz). The trial lasted for approximately 15 minutes (so we can assume, if the 5.12.1949 date is correct, that the trial took place on 5.12.1949. Henke was condemned to death by shooting, while Hüfing also got the death penalty, however Henke does not clarify if it was also death by shooting.

Kaltenegger (Titos Kriegsgefangene) states that he was still a POW on 29.1.1952; I haven't been able to find out when he was released though.

Is there any knowledge/information about a Yugoslavian prison camp after 1945 by the name of Sremska Mitrovica especially for German/Austrian war criminals??
Which archive in today Serbia could be approached?
Thanks.
Huibert
