306th Quartermaster Battalion

Hello,

I would like to have info about the 306th Quartermaster Battalion in general. The only thing I know is that this unit took part in operation (exercise) Tiger (22-30th April 1944) and during the D-Day.

I am also looking for lieutenant Mathew E. Strubel (US army) belonging to this unit and probably reported MIA during exercise Tiger.

In Ken Small's book "The Forgotten Dead" (ISBN 0747504334) he has Strubel as assigned to 557th QM RH Company

Andy, does the book mention a Frank Parisi Jr? He was assigned to the 306th QM and was lost on the 28th.

Also, which LST was the 306th aboard?

I have Parisi's Purple Heart. Oddly enough, Charles B. MacDonald wrote an article on the Exercise Tiger fiasco and he wrote that there were no enlisted casualties in the 306th. Parisi was a PFC

Frank Parisi is listed within the Roll Call of those that died. It states that he was a Pfc within 557th QM RH Company.

Parisi along with several others has the tag NMI, and I'm struggling to find what this abbreviation means!

Andy, NMI stands for "No Middle Initial." It was the Army's way of giving a middle intial to those who didn't have one!

I wonder if the 557th was attached to the 306th...and also..what does the designation "RH" stand for?

Thanks for the NMI.

I believe that RH could stand for Regimental Headquarters-Company

The 306th-557th thing is a bit confusing though.

In regards to what units were assigned to what ship the book doesn't list them as such though it may well mention it in the text. I'll have a quick look tonight.

Again Andy, many thanks for your replies. I've done some more digging, and I've found that the 557th RH Company was a Quartermaster Railhead company- hence the RH designation. Their duties were to ready railroads inland to handle supplies. They lost 69 men in the TIGER attack and did not participate in the D-day landings. I believe that the 557th was not attached to the 306th QM Bn.
