Opinion needed please on authenticity of Luftwaffe Flag. Commander of a Luftgau / Fliegerdivision / Naval Air Force unit

Post by Lam89 » 28 Mar 2021 20:04

Hi All,

I have recently purchased what I believe to be a:

“ Flag for the Commander of a Luftgau or a Fliegerdivision, Leader of Naval Air Force units”

Please see below:

I can only find one other example of a similar flag/pennant but the eagle and Swastika are different to mine shown above.

Please see below for the other example I have found online to compare:

Is mine (the first photo) genuine as I’m fairly new to collecting? I wasn’t sure if it was maybe a different maker hence them not being the same. I have purchased it from a reputable source but I imagine they can make mistakes too.

I’d Appreciate any input. And thank you in advance.

Liam

Hello ;

Better pictures of the eagle's stitched or embroidered will be necessary.

Your Fahne (flag) is for a Fliegerdivision. Not for a Luftgaukommando. Top-to-bottom: black, white, red.
The one on page 107 of the following source is the same as your bottom picture and does not have a heavy, black embroidered edge on the eagle. Hence, yours may be a reproduction.

Bender, Roger James. Air Organizations of the Third Reich. Volume 1. Mountain View (CA): R. James Bender Publishing, 1967. Hb. 192p. Profusely illus. with photos and drawings of uniforms and emblems, both color and b/w.

Thanks for the replies. I’m just waiting for it to be delivered so will add better photos once it arrives.

I’ve been searching online and found a couple of other examples. I had / have the same concern with the heavy black swastika. The two others I found online tonight are both different again. It seems none are exactly the same.

The second flag was featured in this book. But the eagle doesn’t seem as intricate as the first.

I have found another example of Luftwaffe car pennant with a heavy black swastika, when other examples of the same flag don’t have the border.

This one has a heavy border

Where as this one doesn’t..

This dealer is selling a Fliegerdivision flag without a heavy black border around the swastika. But is also selling the Luftwaffe Generals car pennant with a heavy border.

I’m thinking it’s maybe due to different manufacturers? Because no two seem to be exactly the same.

Looks like the eagle doo-dooed on your flag before he took roost on it? Seriously, is that rust, mildew, oil stains or something else?

As I noted earlier, Wehrmacht Awards (U.S.) and Gentlemen's Military Interest Club (U.K.) are your best bets.

Who did you buy this from.. Looks like as stated , a repro artifically aged, and not very good at that.
