Lufthansa and Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei Uniforms

Post by Zirran » 19 May 2021 19:53

Hey guys.

I was wondering if there are any reference materials, books, online sites, for uniforms of the Lufthansa and Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei companies.

In "Uniforms & Traditions of the Luftwaffe Volume 1" by John R. Angolia & Adolf Schlicht, there's a small section that explains that crew members of airships wore the same navy-blue uniforms as those of Lufthansa aircraft, but with a different cap badge. Ground staff wore a uniform almost identical to that of enlisted men of the Kriegsmarine, with their cap tally indicating their particular deployment, e.g. "Graf Zeppelin," "Hindenburg," etc.

Some 1938 Deutsche Luft Hansa images showing various uniforms. Looks like your partially right about enlisted mens “navy“ cap. For DLH though it just has “Lufthansa” and the “bird” logo on the side.

Uniforms, badges and insignia of the Lufthansa are covered in Wim Saris' book Deutsche Lufthansa 1926 - 1945. Geschichte - Bekleidung -Abzeichen. (German language; as far as I know, there is no English edition.)

Headgear of the Lufthansa, the Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei and a wide range of other aviation-related companies and organisations are covered in Vol. 2 of Headgear of Hitler's Germany by Wim Saris & Jill Halcomb Smith with Otto Spronk.

I can recommend both books (and every other work by this author).
