2 UF Troop Strength in late March 1945

Post by Dann Falk » 02 Jul 2021, 20:54

Greetings all,

I have been unable to find the overall troop strength for the 2 Ukrainian Front in March 1945.

I do have a reference that the the entire 2 UF contained 365 operational tanks and self-propelled guns at this time, but nothing about artillery or troop strength.

Any ideas? Please provide any reference quoted.

Thanks in advance

Dann

Appendix to the war diary of the 2 UF, roster of strength of battle formations and units as of 1 March 1945:
https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=113980918

According to these tables 7 Guards Army had 68 073 men in divisions and battle units
9 Guards Army - 117 086
40 Army - 30 866
46 Army - 56 270
53 Army - 35 399
6 Guards Tank Army - 27 383 men
1 Guards Cavalry Mechanized Group - 33 863
Formations and units controlled by the Front's HQ - 54 874
Also 1 Infantry Division (Romanian) - 5612
Romanian divisions and units under 2 UF - 92 211

I believe, total strength was somewhere near 600,000 men not counting Romanians.

As of 1 April 1945:
https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=113723538
7 Guards Army - 66 945 men in divisions and battle units
40 Army - 21 456
46 Army - 86 118
53 Army - 43 391
1 Guards Cavalry Mechanized Group - 37 065
Formations and units controlled by the Front HQ - 63 806
1 Infantry Division (Romanian) - 5588
Other Romanian divisions and battle units - 87 112

Perfect!

I could not find this info in the archives. I will check again using your ID numbers. I’m working on book #2 “7th Guards Army from Kursk to Prague 1943-45” - the last three chapters and the end of the war!

Much Thanks Art…Great Job Спасибо!

There is accurate information relating to 20 April 1945, when 2 UF had 597 442 men total (including probably assigned units of PVO):

On the other hand, official publications gives 613 400 men in the 2 UF on the eve of the Prague operation (early May 1945). Both numbers must include 6 Guards Tank Army which returned to the front and other reinforcements.

Art,

Thanks much for these URLs. I note searching on that site with the term "Ведомость боевого состава войск" brings up very many interesting documents of this kind; I even saw one for the 1st Bulgarian Army in March 1945.

Cheers
