Need Help Translating Hugo Broch Letter

Hello Everyone,
I wrote a letter to Mr. Hugo Broch and I received this reply today. I do not understand it and any help on what it says is much appreciated! Have a good one!

Hi,

The letter reads:

Leverkusen, 19.10.2021

Dear Josiah Sant Singh,

Thank you for your letter.
Since my youth flying was always my dream. The war made it possible for me. As a fighter pilot I could defend myself.
"Thank God" I survived.
Later I also made my private pilot license.
A war is never to be appreciated.
