German Portable Steel Pillbox - Italy 1945

Post by Richard Stone » 23 Jan 2022 07:08

The attached short article shows a portable steel pillbox used by the Wehrmacht in Italy during the 1944 and 1945 period. These particular pillboxes were captured by the British forces.

This copy of the article was printed in the February 1945 issue of the USA professional military reference magazine 'Military Review’.

I posted a duplicate of this post in the website's Axis Fortifications section.

I don't know about these particular "pillboxes" on the pictures, but the Gruson "Fahrpanzer" was produced in Germany and sold to many countries from the 1880's on:

..seems like a good idea......it's a good idea to change positions so the enemy has a harder time of zeroing in on you and making plans for an assault
...of course, it's harder to move around with these things

Hello

The inital picture in the first post, is of this type I think :-)

The procedure of installing such a Portable Steelbox, see enclosed scematics.

The intention is not to move them around, but to transport them to the place where they are to be installed in strategic positions.

They were widely used in Italy late war 1943-44.

NOTE: Also see this topic here on Axis - viewtopic.php?f=70&t=205183&hilit=Panzernest
