HMS Dreadnought & Submarine Sinking Credit

Post by Carl Schwamberger » 26 Jan 2023 18:17

A history of the HMS Dreadnought states it was credited with ramming and sinking a German submarine. Can any experts out their identify the submarine probably sunk, or if this credit has been refuted?

Thanks for any pointers to sources or other information.

Correct. U29 commanded by Otto Weddigen. It is believed Weddigen was attempting a stern torpedo shoot of HMS Neptune which was in line ahead. Stern torpedo shots tended to make the submarine broach, which is what occurred and U29 was sighted. The submarine is less responsive when maneuvering by the stern if Weddigen was even able to observe HMS Dreadnought then next in line, sighted the submarine and altered course to ram.
Weddigen was famous for sinking the British cruisers Aboukir,Cressy,Hogue on Sept 22nd 1914 in U9. Later Hawke in October.
