Raising a glass to veteran British actress Sylvia Syms

Post by VanillaNuns » 27 Jan 2023 17:56

Sad news as the death of veteran British actress Sylvia Syms is announced at the age of 89.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-64426891

In her long career she played everyone from Margaret Thatcher to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

She was also known for her big roles in several war movies. The most famous probably being "Ice Cold in Alex" (1958) with the iconic image below.

Other war movies included "Conspiracy of Hearts" in 1960 and "Operation Crossbow" in 1965.

Another great movie of note was her performance in the Cold War spy thriller "Danger Route" in 1967. A much underrated movie.

Here's to you Sylvia. 🍻 🍺 Carlsberg don't make actresses like you anymore...

Thank you, VanillaNuns

I was not aware about her name, but I remember her face from a feature film or two from years past.

A very nice photo, thank you!

The scene is very famous here in the UK. It was used in an advertising campaign for Carlsberg lager and introduced the movie to a whole new generation. It has gained cult status over the years.

The scene had to be filmed numerous times and John Mills was completely drunk by the end as it was real Carlsberg lager and he'd downed every pint exactly as seen above.

Worth waiting for... 🍻 🍺
