Yes, a steel plate. bunkersite.com shows some examples.
Also, the photo shows only part of the structure. Does this look like it is a discrete structure, or could it be only one gun emplacement in a larger fortification? It is probably not possible to tell.
I can't give you a definite answer, but most German bunkers had a very specific purpose.
It's probably a small gun emplacement.

Maybe you folks would indulge me again. In my photo we see some type of road block. Is this being taken down or erected? Is it intended to be half-blocking the road so that vehicles can pass but not freely? You can see the construction: corrugated metal sheets encasing stones. Additionally, there are two cylindrical objects to the right of the road. Does this look familiar to anyone? The time period is probably May-June, 1940,and the location is probably France. Because there are Wehrmachtvehicles on both sides of the barricade, one doubts that the Germans are closing the road off.

thanks,

John

Thank you. The picture quality is not that good, just a snapshot by a soldier during the war. When you say "armoured plate," are you referring to metal? I was thinking that the photo showed a concrete structure with just an opening for the weapon. Also, the photo shows only part of the structure. Does this look like it is a discrete structure, or could it be only one gun emplacement in a larger fortification? It is probably not possible to tell.

By the way, this is a very interesting thread.

It's probably a Regelbau 505, if you go to http://bunkersite.com again and search for 505 you'll see some examples like the plate on your photo.

Hi,
I'm hoping to tap your collective expertise to help answer a question that's been vexing me for a while now. Can anyone help identify where and what this fortification is? Any ideas what became of it after D-day?
Image
I first saw the image in R.W. Thompson's book D-day. The image caption reads “British bombardment of the mouth of the Orne, seen from German positions” so I suspect we are east of the Orne river maybe in Franceville east. And is this a Renault Ft-17 turret? I'm a real novice at this so would appreciate any help on offer.
Thanks

For me, this seems too high for the flat British beaches. It must be more towards Omaha, Utah.
It is indeed a FT17 turret with 3.7cm gun.

But is this photo not taken from a position to the east of the Orne and therefore outside the D-day landing area? Unless that is it has been reversed?
