Trip to Berlin and Speer's Models

Post by achilles_coyote » 26 Jul 2003 00:58

Hi there,

I am new to this forum. I am doing a project on the book called "Man in the High Castle" from Philip K Dick. IN that book the Axis forces have won WWII and occupy America.

As part of my research, I will be going to Berlin next week. I was wondering if any of you has any idea if any of the models Albert Speer made for his planned future Berlin still survive today, and if so where would these be?

Also, if you have any must see places in Berlin relating to 3rd reich, especially regarding Goering, fire away!!

Thanks :)

Hi!
I cannot help you with your actual question (sorry ;) ) but I read the book you base your project on and I really liked it. What is your project about? Is it a movie or something? :D

Best wishes

Yes the models or at least some of them have survived and the Great Arch can be seen in the History Channels biography of Speer called "Hitler's Henchmen". These models are still in Berlin.

Hi there and thanks for these replies :)

Yes, Ive seen that documentary , but do you happen to know where they would be now?

The project I am doing is basically a movie adaptation of that book. But thats only in theory as I am doing my Masters degree at the moment, in Production Design for Film. So, I am designing part of a future Reichsmarshal HQ, supposedly set in Miami, and also all sort of other stuff, like costumes, vehicles etc.

Thanks for that site! I think its quite what i was looking for :)

I suggest that you get a copy of this book. It may be helpful:

Hitler and the Power of Aesthetics by Frederic Spotts.Published by The Overlook Press, copyright 2003.

It has several photos of the architectural models of Berlin and an in-depth discussion of Hitler's artistic aims and obsessions. It can be ordered through Amazon.com, or any branch of Barnes & Noble.
