Post by k98 » 07 Oct 2003 21:25

 I have recently purchased an k98 bajonett with matching numbers on the blade and on the scarbard. That markings are:
S178K
2583a
It wears Weimar waffenampts 73 but wear no years date, this looks extrange for me because I have some other k98 bajonetts and all of them wear the year on them,so my question is could be this bajonetts on of the very first or not?.I will apreciate any help. Thanks

The makers used an S code for a time being, and S178K could tell you the date,K being 1934.This would mean an early manufacture, since the S code was changed to a three letter code in 1940 I believe.
I think that the 2583a number would mean the 92583 bayonet made by whoever the maker S178 was.About 11 and a half bayonets were made between 1934-45,so yours would be an early one indeed!

SeppCaeser:I can not find any info on your bayonet.3830 could be the number made,or it could mean 3-9-30(the date it ws accepted). The Z is a mystery,I don't believe it to be a German maker's mark or cypher.Possible foreign re-done or manufactured bayo?Any way you can post some pix of it?
