General Alexander von Falkenhausen

Post by Karl » 17 Jun 2002 08:07

Military Governor of Northern France and Belgium ('40-'44).

Was arrested after July plot - although not directly implicated in this specific incident - and interned at Dachau and subsequently moved from concentration camp to concentration camp. Miraculously, he survived the war.

Why did the National Socialists drag their feet sentencing Falkenhausen?

And why did the Allies bother to sentence him in '51 to 12 years when they released him after only three weeks for clemency and in recognition of his efforts in limiting the number of Jews deported?

Hi! First visit to the Forum, and couldn't help noticing the question about General von Falkenhausen.

Why was he released so quickly after sentencing? During 1934 - 1939 he served as military advisor to Chiang Kai-shek (following the footsteps of Hans von Seeckt). This created the bizarre situation of a German general being the chief military advisor to the leader of forces fighting the Japanese, an ally of Germany! Eventually Hitler was forced to recall von Falkenhausen, but Chiang Kai-shek never forgot the help he had received, and interceded with his fellow Allies on von Falkenhausen's behalf to have him released.

Hello AJK.

Really very interesting! Thank you.

Any chance you (or anyone else) might know why he was not executed by the NS? Wasn't he arrested for treason or something related to that effect?

And welcome to the forum.

Hi Karl,

I think that von Falkenhausen's case is similar to that of the former Chief of the General Staff, Generaloberst Franz Halder. They both had links with major players in the July 20 plot to kill Hitler, but neither of them were directly involved, so they were "put on ice" until a future investigation could determine the extent of their knowledge and participation in the plot. Neither of their cases came to trial before the end of the war, which is why both survived.

Alexander von Falkenhausen in his post as Military Governor in Belgium, just like his uncle Ludwig von Falkenhausen in World War I...
