Ardennes - Christmas Eve 1914

I am interested if anyone has any information regarding Christmas Eve on the Western Front 1914. I do know that the German soldiers started singing Christmas carols and this was followed by peace sign being shown to their "enemy" in the form of a branch from a tree. From what I understand the German and allied soldiers both left their fortified trenches and mingled with eachother. I believe that the spirit was broken when Brittish officers ordered their soldiers to fire upon the unarmed Germans. Any info would be much appreciated.
