Hungarian border changes

#1

Post by Gyenes » 24 Feb 2004, 01:03

While reading I noted an exert that stated how early in WW2 Hungary was awarded concessions to be taken from Czechslovakia and Ruthenia area and it mentioned it gave the Hunagrians a long sought after common border with Poland. Why did they want such a border?

I will post the actual text soon and refrence etc.

Because the "little ANTANT" (Czechslovakia, Romania, Yugoslavia) did lot of economic and vehicular dispositions against Hungary.
(The railways dodged Hungary, They did't allow all produces at the border. e.g. military things: the first tank from Italy (CV-35) came in bits like agrarian tracktor, and assembled in Hungary.)
Always was good the relation between Hungary and Poland. (Polish-Hungarian friendship.)

Thank you for that piece of info. Didn't Hungary also allow Polish refugees into her country after Germany invaded Poland in 1939?

Yes. Hungary admited the Polish civilian and soldiers. Therefore Hungary got lots of Polish ordnance (planes, cannons, munitions, etc.), when they entered to Hungary.
Hereby Hungary gave piece of ordnance to Finland when the USSR attacked them.

Here is a link to a Polish government archive page discussing the time spent by some Polish soldier-refugees in Hungary during 1939 and 1940:

A quote from the same site:
The squads of the Polish Army, including the 10th Brigade of Motor Cavalry, individual soldiers and Polish civilians were crossing the Polish-Hungarian border in September and October, 1939. The Hungarians used to treat the refugees in a warm-hearted way. In towns and villages they were offered the food: bread, goulash, grapes and wine. Sometimes they were greeted with due ceremony. The Hungarian press also used to write about the Poles with sympathy. This attitude towards the Poles raised their spirits after the September defeat.

Here is a link to a pdf file of the book, Refugees in Hungary: Shelter from Storm during World War II. by Karoly Kapronczay. It has a lot of information about Polish refugees in Hungary. This pdf file is in English, and will download from the Corvinus Library in Hungary:
