Retreating units... :P

More precise, the enginers covering the retreat.

Yep, I have seen a couple of films showing this vehicle rail-destruction device a few times already. I have also seen old World War I film-footage showing a similar device on another vehicle. I guess this ain´t a "one-off" product.
I believe it´s quite a common machine used when retreating, or for merely destructing railway lines completely.

One thing it might also be good for, is for opening up small trenches so a farmer could plant corn seeds or potatos on a large field.  Although I do not think it was ever used for that sort of agricultural farm work.

I recognise the frame from Nacho above from footage of German units retreating from southern italy after US landings.

During the American Civil War, very similar tools were used. Breaking the crossties however wasn't too much of a deterrent as the rails were still intact and only new lumber needed to be brought in to repair that section of track. When there was time, a more complete destruction could be accomplished by heating the tracks over a fire and then wrapping them around a solid object, rendering them unusable.

This "loop" type (seems to be made out of railway tracks?) railway breaker disintegrated the tracks from the crossties and also bended the tracks. A Soviet equipment towed by two locomotives, was captured by the Finnish troops 1941.
Pic from "Suomi Tahtoi Elää, part 1" (Finland Wanted to Live...) by Taavi Patoharju etc
