As usual, very interesting photos Orlov, which I haven't seen before.

However, one must note that Photos no. 2 and 4 are of tanks of the 2nd Tank Regiment, which wasn't under the division's comand during its operations.

Photo no. 3 is of several Malaxa UE artillery tractors, which were in use by many frontline divisions to tow 47 mm Schneider AT guns during the first year of war.

Thus only photo no. 1 seems to be of R-2 tanks of the 1st Armored Division, somewhere in 1941.

A huge map of the Vorfeld Stalingrads (Nov. 42 - Feb. 43)

#99

Post by Michi » 04 Jun 2006, 00:54

Here is my huge map covering the Vorfeld von Stalingrad.
The map can be used for front-line drawings, for locating units and battle-groups; and other things.
The map
has a size of 4391 x 3100 PX
has a volume of 1,2 MB.

Originally it were 11 German general-staff maps of different size and facing.
My original map has an enormous volume (almost 13 MB!!); I have limited the detail rate to 20%,
to fit in this forum.

Hi bzy16257,
The caption at the back of the middle photograph reads “Antonesku in Bagerowo, Krim”. Bagerovo was an important Luftwaffe airbase in the Crimea, during the siege Sevastopol.
Cheers

P. S.
Russian soldiers have grasped documents of a staff 7 Cav. Div.
From the seized documents it is visible, that this division was not a cavalry literally this word.
The name "cavalry" was kept by tradition. Actually this division was an infantry division, instead of a cavalry.

Everything, that is written in the European sources (memoirs, articles, historical works and so on) about force and
actions XLVIII Pz. Corps (22 Pz. Div., 1 Arm. Div., 354 IR 213 ID) at attempt to reflect impact of Russian troops
of 5-th tank army, it is full nonsense.

All stories about imaginary weakness of forces 48 Pz. Corps have no anything the common that took place actually.

For example, as of morning on November, 23, 1942 German 22 Pz. Div. had not less than 119 tanks.

Thus, one tank batallion (in quantity of 50 tanks) and 129 IR (mot.) were in an encirclement in region Bolshaja Donschinka,
Medvezhij, Malaja Donschinka.

Others 69 tanks (their which 68 tanks were serviceable, and one faulty) were at this time region of settlement
Osery (to the south of river Kurtlak and to a southeast from Petrovka).
These tanks had no some fuel. Except for tanks here there were 156 more motor vehicles.
Taking place in Osery Germans expected, when transport planes will deliver to them fuel.

In it the moment this German group was exposed from two sides of attack Russian. About the west has struck
55 Cav. Div/8th Cav. Corps, and from the east 112 Cav. Div/8th Cav. Corps and
8th SMcR (Separate Motorcycle Regiment).
This attack appeared Germans full unexpectedness. Escaping from Osery German officers had not
time even to dress the overcoats.

Moreover, Germans had not time to warn the pilots that all German technics in Osery appeared in hands Russian.
Nothing suspecting, German pilots have thrown out on Osery special containers with capacities for gasoline.
After that from planes 10 parachuters have jumped out.
When German parachuters have landed, they at once were taken prisoner to Russian.

From these parachuters two persons had a grade of the officer, and eight person were civil persons.
On seen the civil personnel has arrived for repair of faulty technics.
Eight civil Russian have shot all, and two German officers have sent on a motorcycle
in an army headquarters of 5-th tank army.
In prospecting a staff division of 5-th Tank Army these German officers have told that they
should make after a landing.

On this map (excuse, but a map Russian) it is possible to see a place where tanks 22 Pz. Div have been grasped.

And this report of the commander of 8-th Cav. Corps general - major Dudko in whom it is informed
capture of tanks 22 Pz. Div

Central Archive Ministersva of Defenses of the Russian Federation
Fund 331 Inventory 5041 File 14 sheet 364

To the commander 5ÒÀ

To general - lieutenant Romanenko

1. On November, 24 1942 units 8th Cavalry Corps /55 and 112 CDs/, having beaten out the opponent
from ferries on river Chir on site Warlamovskij, Osinovskij, Arzhanovskij, have broken the grouping of
the opponent following through settlements Slaboda Russkaja, Osery.
As a result of fight the opponent has lost up to 700 person killed, wounded and captured.
69 serviceable tanks, up to 200 motor vehicles and up to 60 motorcycles are seized.
All motor transport is left in area Osery for the lack of gasoline.

The commander 8 CC the general - major /Dudko/
=================================================

In a strip of attack of 5-th tank army its opponents (Germans and Romanians) had enough forces to detain Russian's attack.
Except for those forces that there were in the front of defense (have been shown earlier) Romanians had here
in a reserve: 15 Inf. Div, 7 Cav. Div
Within three day could approach: 7 Inf. Div.
Germans had: XLVIII Panzer Corps: 22 Pz. Div., 1st Arm. Div., 354 Inf. Reg. 213 Inf. Div.
Total: 8 divisions, including 2 tank divisions
Defeat has taken place not because 5-th tank army had what that overwhelming superiority.
Defeat has taken place because command XLVIII Panzer Corps has not truly estimated conditions and,
accordingly, operated not truly.
And, instead of fairly recognizing the mistake, the German military leaders have thought up a history
from the category of how geese have rescued Ancient Rome.
With that only a difference, that under the version of the German military leaders
in the late autumn of 1942 field mice Russian have helped.
Russian think now above such problem: where it is better to put a monument to field mice - in Moscow or Stalingrad.

P. P. S.

I do not know as will correctly show forces of Russian 5-th that army for November, 19, 1942.
Here, on this thread, or on a thread:
Axis History Forum » WW2 in Eastern Europe » Soviet Fronts strengths: Overview.

But that thread, like, is intended for Soviet Fronts strengths.
How it is necessary to make correctly?
Somebody will prompt.
