I can also add, that the quarry photo can be found in the book Benito Bermejo: Francisco Boix, der Fotograf von Mauthausen (book also comes in other languages as far as I know) and in a little bit better (but noch much) resolution in the book: Das sichtbare unfassbare / the visible part - photographs of Mauthausen Concentration Camp. ( page 63). The latter is the catalogue of an exhibition, no author given.

Of course, there is the connection of his II Btl. of the Pol Rgt Bozen to the Ardeatine Caves Massacre. That might be Menschik shaking hands with him in the photo in this link. http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 8&start=15
Max, I find out now that I was mistaken. Thanks to the detective work of membe Roberto Fontana, we can identify Dobek as being in the present Luigi Cadorna Casere in Bozen. So evidently, this photo was taken after his transfer from Pol Geb Jag Rgt 18 to III/Pol Rgt Bozen in Sept 1943. Here is a photo comparison of the barracks today with the photo of Dobek.

Very nice Daniel. As he was only a Leutnant in this photo, I would surmise it was taken after his graduation from the Officer's School. But is he wearing Adjutant Cords or a Dress cords?

Hello Daniel!
I think the man who is sitting to the right of the Carl von Retzlaff is Walter Griphan (future SS-Brif. und Generalmajor der Polizei) as Chef des Stabes des Kommandos der Schutzpolizei Wien.
Best regards,

Andrey.

JoeW wrote:The information that I have located indicates that Dobek was appointed Btl. Kdr. of III/Pol Rgt. Bozen on 15.9.43. He evidently relieved Dobbrick if the information in the book "Death in Rome" is to be believed. So Dobek was commander at the time of the Via Rassalla attack the following Spring and the subsequent massacre in the Ardeatine Caves. He was reported missing in July 1944.
I thought I would bring up this thread again to see if someone can help me in sorting out some historical contradictions. This thread was used by Wikipedia to provide info on Dobek in this link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Dobek . The problem arises in their statements that Dobek was directly involved in the discussion in Rome regarding the proposed retribution for the Via Rasella attack on the 11th Company of Pol Rgt Bozen. Wikipedia's listing for Pol Rgt Bozen lists the commander of the third batallion as Hellmuth Dobbrick. But clicking on that name brings up the Dobek Wikipedia article that lists Dobbrick as Dobek's "aka". Now I am confused. One of the sources for info on the massacre and participants is Robert Katz's book "Death in Rome". He lists the commnander as Dobbrick. And there was Schupo Hauptmann Hellmuth Dobbrick. But in a work in the 2002 quarterly of the Institute für Zeitgeschichte, http://www.ifz-muenchen.de/heftarchiv/2 ... rauser.pdf, the author Steffen Prauser identified the batallion commander as Dobek. Does anyone has an opinion on whose is correct?

Hans Dobek, also known as Hellmuth Dobbrick, (born March 3, 1907; buried in Costermano, (Verona), July 5, 1944),was a Major in the Nazi German Ordnungspolizei (Orpo) during the Second World War and also a Sturmbannführer in the SS.

In 1943, Major Dobek was serving in the Schutzpolizei of the Orpo and was assigned to command the 3rd battalion of the SS Police Regiment Bozen, September 15, 1943 to July 5, 1944. His duties included overseeing the activities of five police companies, one of which (the 11th company) was a garrison security force assigned to Rome.

Participant in the failed putsch between 25 and July 30, 1934 against the Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss and for which he was sentenced to hard labor. His release as well as other jailed Austrian SS was negotiated between Kurt Alois von Schuschnigg and Hitler in 1938.

SS Nr.: 310.495.
NSDAP Nr.: 897.520.

November 1, 1937: SS-Hauptscharführer.
July 25, 1938: SS-Untersturmführer.
November 9, 1938: SS-Obersturmführer.
March 1, 1940: SS-Hauptsturmführer.
November 9, 1943: SS-Sturmbannführer.

Dobek is historically remembered for refusing to place his men at the disposal of Herbert Kappler to conduct the Ardeatine massacre. Dobek was subsequently placed under house arrest by Kurt Mälzer, the garrison commander of Rome, under charges of insubordination. Malzer had threatened a charge of treason, but this was never filed, with all charges against Dobek later dropped in light of the rapid advance of Allied armies through Italy and the retreat of German forces.

Dobek's fate in the war was killed by italian partisan in Veneto, July 5, 1944. Dobek was later dramatically portrayed in the film Massacre in Rome.

Identifying Dobek as Hellmuth Dobbrick is misleading speculation. They were two different officers. Also, his supposed actions following the Via Rassella attack are pure speculation and cannot be supported by any documentation from his SS Offizier Akten.
