Generalleutnant Wilhelm Schmalz

Gentlemen!

The decorations that Wilhelm Schmalz had won were:

Knight's Cross: 11/28/1940 as an Heer Major who was a Kommandeur I/SchutzRgt. 11

German Cross in Gold:?

Oak Leaves: 12/23/1943 as a Luftwaffe Oberst who was a Kommandeur of a Brigade of the "Hermann Goering" Division

Schmalz later commanded the "Hermann Goering" Fallschirm-Panzer-Division and the "Hermann Goering" Fallschirm-Panzer-Korps until the end of the War. I am surprised that Schmalz was never awarded the Swords decoration. It was a very big responsible job to commanded a division and a Korps and Schmalz did a commendable job in providing leadership to his two commands. I wonder if he was recommanded for that high decoration concerning the Swords?

Sincerely,

Edward :|

Sorry to raise this thread from the grave, but I am wondering if anyone had personal information on Wilhelm Schmalz? Perhaps if he had kids, where he was born, died, etc.

Hello to all :D; an old one, but still......................

Wilhelm Schmalz.
Sorry to raise this thread from the grave, but I am wondering if anyone had personal information on Wilhelm Schmalz? Perhaps if he had kids, where he was born, died, etc.
On November 30, 1936 he married Luise Henriette Princess of Prussia (1912-1973). Four children were born of this marriage. Agathe Friederike Henriette Margarete Brunhilde Eleonore Marianne Elisabeth Schmalz (1937-2008); Hubertus Ernst Viktor Wilhelm Friedrich Schmalz (1938); Bernhard Hans Heinrich Walter Karl Ernst Schmalz (1941-2013); Friedrich Wilhelm Martin Julius Eck Conrad Ludwig Schmalz (1943).

One question, does anyone know the reason why he was selected to organize the new Hermann Goering division in Mont-de-Marsan and on April 1, 1943 he officially joined the Luftwaffe?
