Incidents involving Canadian and German units in Normandy...

Post by Gwynn Compton » 10 Aug 2002 10:35

I remember hearing a while ago about the SS Hitler Jugand Division, and the Canadians at Normandy killing each others prisoners, does anyone have any information on this?

Regards

Gwynn

Go to the " In desperate battle" section.
Then goe to issues and you'll find stuff there. I recommend going throught the whole site. not that big and very interesting. Then again, I'm Canadian. :D

Sorry Gwynn, the site is being overhauled as far as i can tell. You can still get the fundamental details of atrocites by both sides, but for more detailed stuff, you have to dig. I think it's still all ther...just not so esy to find.

Looks like they were scratching the barrel a little with this gang. Maybe just office people?

Yep, those boys aint HJ, but after Omaha, the Canadian beach was the next heaviest defended. Plus they got further inland than any of the allies.
Sorry  Just that old national pride coming through.

They look like Organisation Todt people, probably fortifications engineers. The one has a wound badge in silver.

Indeed, and thats what I'm trying to uncover. I'm trying to find just what happened between these two foes, and whether the Canadians are also guilty of the same crimes as their opponents.

I'm already aware of several incidents when New Zealanders killed German prisoners before a retreat, to prevent them being liberated, and I knew one of the soldiers involved before he passed away. But I've only heard the occastional bits of information about incidents in Normandy, and I've had some difficulty in finding information on them.

There used to be stuff on there about canadian atrocities. And last night I read a section on the Canadian take no prisoners order. I will go over it and send you specific links, read the story on Jaques Dextraze, he has an account of the drowning of german POWS.

For something right away, go to Marcus' Military history forum. Go to the ww2 section. The topic is " We now know about soviet atrocities what about allied. Go to page 2. I post there as "Landser". I give 3 incidents af Canadian warcrimes, and my source was "A meeting of Generals" by Tony Foster.

By the way, I recommend the book. It is all about the warcrimes commited by 12thss and Canadians and covers the battle and the trial of Kurt Meyer.
