only something about his death...
ZANIS BUTKUS
Palmer resident Zanis Butkus, 92, died May 15, 1999, at his home.
No service is planned.
Mr. Butkus was born in Latvia on July 29, 1906 to Fricis and Anna Butkus. He attended schools in Latvia. He was a member of the Latvian Legion from 1939-1946 and was a highly decorated veteran. He was an expert marksman with NRA National in 1966 and 1967.
He came to Alaska in 1985 to watch his grandchildren grow. He was a member of St. John's Latvian Lutheran Church in Wisconsin.
According to his family, "John always cared for his family first. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and especially thankful to his granddaughter, Amanda, for the care she provided when he became disabled. He was a very humble man who never let on about his barvery and accomplishments during World War II, but has left a legacy his family will always be proud to carry."
Mr. Butkus is survived by his wife, Velta, of Palmer; daughters, Ulla of Palmer; Inta of Los Osos, California; and Marga and Mirdza of Latvia; granddaughters, Tamara and Amanda; grandsons, Kristaps and Jared, all of Palmer; great-grandson, Jeremiah Combs of Palmer; other family members in Florida and Latvia; and special friend, Helen Stice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Officer James Rowland Memorial Fund, c/o any branch of the National Bank of Alaska. Arrangements for the family were made by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary Chapel.
(Note: James Rowland was a Palmer police officer who died in the line of duty a few days before Mr. Butkus died. The James Rowland fund is intended for the benefit of Officer Rowland's wife and young child.)

While this is a history forum, I wonder if threads with the same pic in all kinds of variations serve our purpose of promoting sourced, fact-based knowledge.

AlifRafikKhan,
Thank you for posting the enhanced image of Zanis Butkus, presumably in response to the Original Poster's (FlorianBerger) request for another photo.
While previously familiar with only the broadest outline of Butkus' miliary service I too was impressed with the embellished narritive of his obituary. Similarly, in my subjective view, the enhanced image, as with the enhanced syntax, perhaps gives one an opportunity to better momentarlily memorialize who this man was.

With all respect to my esteemed colleague, I must agree with this assessment. Very well expressed.
