Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 06 Sep 2004 06:31

Gentlemen,

I came across a web site in German language a list of U-boat commanders with their U-boats that they commanded. I found one mistake already that this name should have been Otto Westphal instead of Otto von Westphal. Well, I came across this name which I don't know if its correct or not. His name was Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Lehmann-Willenbrock. Now all the U-boat commanders names only contained first or double first names and their last names. I know for many years that name Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock is correct. I found his full name in doubt and wonder why it was printed that way. I really can't trust the internet these days either in English or German. Can anyone help me? :?

Sincerely,

Edward

I think you know that "Der Alte" (the old commander) in the famous movie "Das Boot" (according to the book of Lothar-Günther Buchheim) was indeed Lehmann-Willenbrock.

After the war he was as "Kapitän auf Großer Fahrt" commander of the only german merchantman with atomic propelling force "Otto Hahn".

Birth Date Wrong!

Dear Sir,

Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock's correct birth date should be 11,Dec. 1911,not 1908 according to plenty of sources including the U-boat.net.

Edward :)

Hi Edward
Yes ! I commit an error, the correct date of birth is 11-12-1911
I have different sources but one of them is:
"Die Ritterkreuzträger der Deutschen Wehrmacht 1939-1945
Teil IV Die U-Bootwaffe Band 2 K-Z

Gentlemen,

I wonder how these books "Die Ritterkreuztraeger der Deutschen Wehrmacht, 1939-1945" published by Bibio-Verlag could come up with full names for plenty of Ritterkreuztraegers? For instance, from the U-Bootwaffe I found by accident on the internet the name Heinrich Gunther Prien.

Sincerely,

Edward

Edward,

I wonder how these books "Die Ritterkreuztraeger der Deutschen Wehrmacht, 1939-1945" published by Bibio-Verlag could come up with full names for plenty of Ritterkreuztraegers?

Generally speaking, an officer’s full name can be found in his official personnel record. I’ve included scans from the Personal-Nachweis page of the Dienstlaufbahn of three generals illustrating how their full names were documented. Note how the general’s given name was underlined to differentiate it from his other names. Judging by the detailed entries in the Biblio books, I surmise the authors researched the official personnel records in most cases.

General der Panzertruppe Gustav Fritz Julius von Vaerst

Generalmajor Hartmann Maria Freiherr von Ow auf Wachendorf

Generalleutnant Kurt Johann Friedrich Ludwig Marius Adolf Eduard Alexander Weckmann

Best regards,
Shawn
