Stug 4 unit emblem

Post by UnterKroon » 07 Nov 2004 09:33

This picture is taken in 1945-1947 in Estonia, Peedu. Near Elva-Tamsa were fought SS Kampfgruppe "Strachwitz". My question is...what unit emblem is that? Is it SS panzerbrigade "Gross" or other unit emblem which was in KG "Strachwitz"?

Hi,

I don't think this is a German unit symbol, more likely Soviet, may be wrong though. As it's in Estonia, I'll have a crack at ID'ing. Must be an early one, so not many units would have been issued with Stug IV. by then. I take it Elva is the local County Capital?

I'll come back here after staring at maps and OOB's.

Regards,

Roger

That battle took place in August 1944. Yes Elva is a country capital.
Why do you think that this is soviet emblem?

Hi,

I've done a little, or not so little exercise. I've also sharpened up my geography, Presumably we are talking of the Elva area on the road rail route between Tartu and Valga. This should have been XXVIII Corps (18 Army) area of operations.

Unfortunately, several ID's had been issued Stug. IV by this time. In XXVIII Corps, 30ID, 31ID and 61ID all had Stug. IV. As regards Panzer Verband Strachwitz and Panzer Brigade Gross, I can't see any association with Stug. IV. from issue lists, courtesy Martin Block.

Regards,

Roger

Yes thats the same area.
I think that this Stug was in KG "Strachwitz" because this unit was only in that area who had tanks (may be wrong).
I know that in Panzerbrigade "Gross" there was 1. SS-Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung (12 StuG III). But this Stug is Stug 4

Hmm from some source it was said 12. Feld-Division (L) elements which fought near to Elva had 10 StuGs. I find it odd because I have not found from any other OOB of this division any StuGs.
It is said 12th Luftwaffe Fielddivision was one of two best LW Fielddivisions so they could have had some support? Or could it have been something else? Not too far some time later another StuG unit is mentioned in minor counterattack behind line "Valka", 15 machines.

Any chance this machine was in LW Felddivision Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung?
