If "E-boat" is a Royal Navy term which means "Enemy boat", can somebody kindly tell me what did the Royal Navy call these boats before 3 September 1939?

No one knows what the "E" in "E-boat" stands for. "Enemy" is only one of several suggestions, none of which are very convincing.

hi,

regrettably, that sketch is quite off the truth. Reality was much more complicated.

The "Rotte" (group of two boats, normal for e-boat operations) 136/138 did not participate in the decisive attack. Their torpedoes were fired more than 30 min before the LSTs were hit. S 100 and S 150 belonged to different flottillas and did not operate together.

The boats which achieved the real hits were S 130, S 145 and S 150 of 9th flottilla operating together in a 3 boat group.

Thus, this info provided earlier in the thred is correct :
a post by Andy H reads:
A good book about Op.Tiger is Ken Small's "Forgotten Dead" published by Bloomsbury ISBN 0747504334, maybe worth a trip to the library?
Anyway Peterson was awarded Oakleaves to his KC for this attack on Op. Tiger. The 9th Flotilla's count was as follows:-
S130 1/2 a kill (shared with S150), sunk LST507
S145 1 kill, sank LST531
S150 1/2 a kill (shared with S130), sunk LST507, and 1 kill LST289

I provide a sketch based on war diary of "Führer der Schnellboote" with my own additions with respect to the boat numbers.

greetings, the pb

Yes, it seems that the engagement was far closer to Portland than usually documented.

hi,

a minuscule error in your link : the ships were LST's.
