Unfortunately, there are no photos in the book. It begins 13th August, 1914 near Moyen at the Congo river in Cameroon and ends in January, 1916 near Ntum.

Hi Holger,

Thanks for posting that book cover. I doubt that the cover shows the author. The uniform seems to be that worn by the early Truppe des Reichskomissars in DSWA from about 1888-91. There are also photos of Schutztruppe soldiers later wearing the same uniform on parade to celebrate the anniversary of the Schutztruppe in DSWA. I've not seen photos of anyone in Kamerun wearing this uniform. It seems ironic that the title is "Im Tropenhelm" and the photo shows a man without a tropical helmet!

So how is the book? An interesting read? Does it provide any new or interesting information on the Kamerun Campaign? What unit does he serve in?

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris

Thanks for the background info.
Sorry, I haven´t really start to read the book. If I have news about this, then I will announce myself.
It seems ironic that the title is "Im Tropenhelm" and the photo shows a man without a tropical helmet!
exactly, you are right! But on the original photo in DSWA, they show all the Headgear.

Hi Christophe,

Thanks for posting that photo, very good. It looks like a post 1918 photo. Is that a Lion Order worn under the EK1 on his breast? Can you show a close up photo of the medals? What medal is he wearing before the EK2 on his medal bar? He is probably then not Prussian, maybe Bavarian or Saxon?

Cheers

Hi Christian,

Here is more info I have about this officer
He received his knight cross of St Henry of Saxe on 21 January 1920.

He has got both iron crosses, knight cross 1st class with swords of Ernestine House, the Lion Order, the medal of Hamburg and an unknown medal (probably colonial commemo).

Here is the close up of his medals

Chris Dale wrote:Hi Zdrowko,

Thanks for your post, I've looked in the Schutztruppe rank lists for May 1914 and yes, here's there as an Oberleutnant. I think you've put an extra "C" in his first name, isn't it Eberhard? That might help in Google searches, also try searching with an umlaut over the "O" as in "Eberhard Schöpffer". I did a quick search on him and it seems there's quite a bit of information on his WW2 activities.

Hi Chris,
in my latest book "Der 1. Weltkrieg in Deutsch-Südwestafrika 1914/15", 1. Band, on page 115, Oberleutnant Schöppfer is referred to as Adjutant of von Rappard. Hope this is a little help to the issue.

Interested in books about WW I in German Southwestafrika? We recommend:
"Der 1. Weltkrieg in Deutsch-Südwestafrika 1914/15" by Historicus Africanus
"Gut und Blut für unsern Kaiser" by Karl Waldeck
Both books published by Glanz & Gloria Verlag in Namibia, on sale for Europe at Namibiana Buchdepot, in Delmenhorst, in Germany. Plenty of photos in both books.

The man on the left might be the German Governor,Dr Seitz?
The men are from left to right: Franke, Seitz, Graf Schwerin (standing) unknown, Botha, found in the book "Gut und Blut für unseren Kaiser" by Unteroffizier Karl Waldeck, page 67, there you also find the "Kapitulationsvertrag" on same page.

Hi everyone,
Can anyone assist me with a map or picture of Herbertshohe in 1989 the capital of German New Guinea? It has taken me ages to find one.

Cheers

The photo in # 93 was taken in Windhuk. The Auas mountains to the south can be seen behind the Schutztruppe
