Hello to all :D; a little complement...................

The U + letter. The UA.

On June 25, 1936 the shipyard Germaniawerft KIEL received the order to build the UA / BATIRAY. On February 10, 1937 laying of the keel of the UA. The submersible was launched on September 28, 1938, being commissioned on September 20, 1939. The crew consisted of 41 sailors, five officers and one doctor. The officers were: Commander Kptlt. Hans Cohausz, LI Kptlt.-Ing. Teichmann, IWO OLt.z.S. Staats, IIWO Lt.z.S. Baberg, IIIWO Lt.z.S. der Reserve Robi Metz and Oberassistenzarzt Dr. Helmut Richter from Villach/Kärnten.

As the ship was out of the line, she was called UA and opened the U letter sequence. The commander took charge of the submersible's emblem and called it "Optimistic" a hopeful sign.

The ship and her equipment.

Outwardly the submersible was much bigger than the Germans. The gun of 105 mm, as the same level as the conning tower, formed a single structure therewith. The cowling of the weapon could rotate as a whole with the gun; an advantageous arrangement and good protection for the crew in case of rough seas. She had a great "winter garden" so that during the ceremony of commissioning, the entire crew found place there. Another difference was the aft curvature, the width of the upper deck and the length of the boat, 87 meters. She had large double hull with ballast tanks and compartments along it and at the time was the largest submersible of the force. The inner hull was riveted and not welded as the German submersible, so the depth of "theoretical" immersion was limited to 80-90 meters.

Due to her length the compartments were larger, so the commander and the engineer had adequate cabins. She had four torpedo tubes forward and two aft like the type IX. Thus carried six torpedoes in the tubes, plus four in reserve in the bow and two aft. There were not tubes under the upper deck.

Hello to all :D; something more...................

The U + letter. The UA.

The propulsion system.

The diesel engines were clearly differentiated from all German submarines. In the "UA" was 2 two times engines directly reversibles from the Danish company Burmeister and Wain, Copenhagen. As the motors are out of the standard needed an extra element. As is well known, in the 2-stroke engines in the power stroke with a turn of the crank, the intake cycle is very short. To overcome this, each engine was fitted with a fan, so that each cylinder was supplied with air for combustion. Another problem was that due to the low pressure of the two-stroke, could be that the ejection cycle of the diesel engine does not have the strength to start a new cycle, for that reason was installed in the engine room a powerful turbo electric compressor, consuming a lot of electricity and produced abundant noise. Electric motors were similar to the German submersible as the same with the battery system, two with 120 cells each.

Diving mechanism.

The system of ballast tanks and buoyancy was similar to the Germans, grouped into three groups to facilitate fore-center-aft effects during the maneuver of immersion. The tanks were designed in proportion to the size of the ship so the immersion times were similar to a type VII-C.

Last phase of construction and commissioning.

In this phase the crew worked closely with the staff of the shipyard and was very productive especially for the machines personnel, because in the first place had to change all instructions and labels of steam valves, gates, switches, etc from Turkish to German. The fish could happily leave the yard in late November 1939 and was assigned a permanent berth at the Tirpitz pier.

Hello to all :D; something more...................

The U + letter. The UA.

The trials with the UAK (U-Abnahmekommando).

The UAK -trials began in early December, under the supervision of Kpt. z See Bräutigam. Several diving exercises and diving alarms in the Bay of Kiel as well as compensating the gyro compass system were the last activities in 1939. Holiday for all, at Christmas and New Year, closed the year.

For further trials, after the New Year, we headed towards the deep water of the Gulf of Gdansk for the mile ride and also further immersion tests. The default speed of 18 knots was achieved. In the deep-diving trials, the limited depth due to our riveted boat was crossed without problems. It was a sedative for us. The final evaluation on our boat was conducted in Pelzerhaken / Bay of Lübeck and marked the end of our Baltic driving. In early February 1940 we had a short stay in the shipyard to finish some other works.

The torpedo-shooting section with the TEK (Torpedoerprobungskommando).

Torpedo firing exercises were conducted day and night in the Flensburg Fjord in early March. It was not only a training for the torpedo staff and seamen, but also for us in the engine room. Our L-Ing. endeavored in every way to make us well know of all the eventualities, we could expect in the future. At that time were known the experiences of the boats of the U-Flotilla Wegener coming from the front.

Hello to all :D; something more...................

The U + letter. The UA.

First operation.

The first action was slow in coming. By April 9, 1940, the occupation of Denmark and the Norwegian campaign began. Among the crew came the voice that we would sail to Norway. As mentioned before, the UA was the largest boat of the fleet and that included the tanks. In short we had to replenish the Luftwaffe with aviation fuel. In order to carry out this, little changes should be make in the filling systems, which were executed in a short time at the shipyard.

Summarizing were transported:

165 m³ of aviation fuel.
5 tons of lubricating oil for aircraft engines.
90 tons of engine oil for submarines.
1 anti-aircraft gun of 8.8 cm with accessories and 1,150 rounds of ammunition,
16 bombs of 250 kg.

In short, a highly explosive cargo, requiring absolute safety measures throughout the ship, including the conning tower and the upper deck throughout the operation. With mixed feelings we sailed from Kiel in mid-April. Helgoland was on our route, there we remove the anti-ice device from the bow and spent the night. The next morning we had a sky with low clouds and a stiff breeze, normal to the season in the North Sea. Without interference we leave the German Bight, heading to the Norwegian coast.

In the evening we made a crash dive; the weather was worsening, with winds of force 7. As we progress to the north, the weather got worse. Our goal is Trondheim. No one knew how far the English naval force present in the area was. After five days we were within a reasonable distance of the fjord, the commander verified submerged the approach of any vessel in the surface. Two days later we entered the fjord at night, the situation was explosive and uncertain.

Just a shadow, a small guard station. From there comes a megaphone question: is Obersteuermann Arnaschuß on board? The answer is yes and then we were guided to the berth. The guide and our navigator are old comrades. All are happy, the first operation was carried out.

In the following days was the less hazardous cargo was unloaded and the aviation fuel was transferred to a barge. With empty tanks we dive several times into a deep point in the fjord in order to remove the traces of fuel. Despite of the fighting, the return trip to Kiel was uneventful. We spent some time at the shipyard to convert the systems to "normal". There was an explosion in one of the empty tanks and a worker was seriously injured; the cause was a spark of a damaged lamp cord.

cruise:

Apr 27, 1940 - 00:00 hours sailing from Kiel.
May 02, 1940 - 1:23 hours arrival in Trondheim.
May 05, 1940 - 19:00 hour sailing from Trondheim.
M 10, 1940 - 14:45 hours arrival in Kiel.

Hi Guys,

Is there a good book on the German interwar development of U-boat design by sales to other powers using subsidiary foreign shipyards like IvS in the Netherlands, etc.?

Where do the two Romanian submarines Marsuinul and Requinul feature in this developmental progression?

Cheers,

Sid.

Hello to all :D; more..........................

U-boat Type IvS.

In addition to the U boats for the German Navy (Kriegsmarine), the shipyard Krupp Germania Werft, Kiel built two submarines to export to Turkey. On June 25, 1936, it was received an order for the construction of two Type IvS U boats (Batiray, Saldiray). The contract was signed by the Deputy Minister of Defense General Kazım Özalp for the Turkish side and by Ferro A.G steel and N.V. Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw for the German side.

The IvS Type was a larger and improved design from the earlier E-1 design built in Spain. It was faster thanks to more modern machinery and had greater range. In particular the Batiray was a mine-laying submersible with five launching tubes placed on each side in the main ballast tank. She was still in the trials phase when the war broke out and was seized by Germany. After passing to the U-Bootwaffe the mine tubes were converted into fuel tanks.

In total, 4 IvS units were built; Two of them were built in Germany (Saldiray and Batiray), and two in Turkey (Atilay and Yildiray). In the construction of the two submersibles of this type made in Germany, only Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel (2 units) intervened. The "Batiray" was taken over by the Kriegsmarine and was put into service on September 12, 1939, as U-A.
