Chris,

Ist pic is very interesting. Never seen before the armband "Selbstschutz".
Selbstschutz was my first field of research.
I published an article in 1991 upon Selbstschutz in west Poland territories (in French).

To help you here a chart of Selbstschutz Westpreussen.

- Selbstschutz Führer : SS Oberf Ludolf von Alvensleben. (4)
Inspektion Bromberg Ostubaf Erich Sparmann
Inspektion Plutowa SS Staf Ludolf Jakob von Alvensleben (6)
Inspektion Strasburg SS Staf Alexander von Woedtke
Inspektion Konitz SS Staf Heinz Mocek
Inspektion Preuss. Stargard SS Stubaf Josef Meier
Inspektion Hohensalza SS Ostubaf Dr Hans Kolzow

best

Georges

Nr 8 could be SS-O’Stub Spaarmann (32), holder goldenen Ehrenzeichen der NSDAP. And nr 7 ? Not Wardemann (he promoted to Stub 30.1.42), not Paulsen (only O’Stuf and holder E.K II and goldenen Ehrenzeichen der NSDAP), possibly Schnug (but I can’t see his E.K. I) or Stub (20.4.39) Kippels (30).

Hello,
Re-hotted thread...
I got this pic and caption is "Ludolf von Alvensleben with Selbstschutz inspection's leaders"

For clear situation I numbered persons:

1. SS-Ustuf ???
2. SS-O’Stub Dr Hans Kölzow (Inspektion III - Hohensalza)
3. SS-Obf Ludolf Herrmann von Alvensleben "Bubi" (later SS-Gruf - 9 November 1943)
4. SS-Staf Ludolf Jacob von Alvensleben (Inspektion II - Plutowo / Thorn)
5. SS-Stub Christian Schnug (Inspektion VI - Bromberg - since Dec 1939)
6. SS-Stub Josef Meier ("Blutmeier") (Inspektion V - Preußisch Stargard)
7. SS-Staf Heinz Mozek (Inspektion IV - Konitz)
8. SS-O’Stub Erich Spaarmann (Inspektion VI - Bromberg - until Nov 1939)

Nr 1 could be somebody from Straßburg : Woedtke, Paulsen or Wardemann.
Woedtke was SS-Staf in that time - so not...Wardman's promotios are unknown for me....maybe Karl Paulsen ?

....and photo nr 2:
From left to right:
Ludolf Jacob von Alvensleben, Erich Spaarmann, Dr Hans Kölzow and Christian Schnug

All the best

the "Selbstschutzverein" were militia of the german community of Poland set up by the SS mainly in western areas of Poland where this community was established. At middle and high level, the staff was 100 % german SS.
They served as auxilliary for "security purpose" to germans authorities.
They were involved in a number of war crimes during actions to destroy spirit of resistance and anti german feelings through polish population : intelligentzia, patriots, priesters were the main target.
They acted mainly in the months following the Polandfeldzug in 1939.

So when I'm correct August Meier was never head of the Inspektion Preussisch Stargard, that officer was called Josef Meier.
Or is this the same person???

I've a August Meier in my files and he was connected to the Einsatzgruppen in 1941.
I've no Josef Meier in my files, who can give me some more info about that officer with the nickname 'Blutmeier'???

Thanks,
Mike

the authorized source Jansen/Weckbecker Der Volksdeutsche "selbstschutz" in Polen 1939 - 1940
and my own source confirm JOSEF Meier as Selbstschutz Führer

MEIER Josef was as Stubaf (Sonderführer) attached to HSSPF Ukraine on 10/42

SS 43276
PN 182 411

He was an allgemeine SS leader.
