ONE SAD STORY... (...just one of many)

Nikola Kalabić, JVuO lieutenant-colonel

The most controversial person in JVuO (Mihailović's četniks).
Draža's right hand, commander of an elite četnik unit Mountain King's Guard,
duke of Oplenac, man hunted by both Germans and partisans.
History remembers him as a man who betrayed and helped capturing
famous četnik commander Dragoljub Mihailović.
If this is actually true, or not, still is mystery...

As family of četnik officer, they were sent to concentration camp Banjica on 19.XII 1942.
Commander Vujković told them that they all should be shot.
In summer 1943, they were in the group for execution as a reprisal for
četnik Mountain King's Guard action against Germans in Stragari (50 Germans & 50 SDK members killed).
In autumm of 1943, they've managed to escape thanks to Nikola's
undercover officer in Nedić's service Kostadin Košutić.
When Nikola saw his daughter after 3 years, he cried...
And after the war - the real hell began for Kalabić's family...

Nikola's father Milan, when war broke out, was an officer in Nedić's service.
Like many other Nedić's men, he helped četniks (his son).
Germans arrested him in February 1942 and then again in September 1942,
He was tortured to death, but he told them nothing about his četnik connections.

When Kalabić's mother, wife and daughter were captured by communists in Zelengora in May 1945,
they told them they were family of this četnik. But someone recognized them as Kalabić's.
Daughter Mirjana (15 years old) was mobilized in 18.Croatian Brigade and mother and wife were sent to prison.

German general Felber (about these negotiations):
1.Movement DM was and stays an enemy.
2.Their collaboration with German and legal Serbian units against reds
is the result of the fact that communists in Serbia are their enemy number 1.
Enemy number 2 stays ocupation force.
3.Collaboration is used for munition supplies recovering (they never got weapons).
We should always count on new enemy orientation of DM movement against ocupation force...

Albert Seitz wrote in his memoirs about Kalabić:
Nikola was one of the most interesting people in whole Yugoslavia...
In his smart black uniform and always clean underwear he looked
like an imposing gentleman and soldier.
His heroism soon became legendary.

Last one:
Communist literature claims that this is Nikola Kalabić with partisans (disguised as četniks),
day after they captured Gen. Mihailović.
This photo simply isn't clear enough to be sure.
You can make every long-bearded man's face blury
and claim it is Kalabić.

There are several versions of Kalabić's fate and Draža's capturing,
but none of them can be called final and true.

But - that's another story...

What does the book say about the photo-sources?
There are so many Gebirgsjäger men on them.
Soldier in second photo in light uniform wears mountain boots
(and a patch on his right arm).

I'm glad that we straightened it out. And photos of Pecanac are excellent!

Here are a couple of Gebirgsjaeger pics,nr. 2 and 3. taken during "Schwarz" I believe (since there wer no German units in Montenegro in fall of 1941,as the caption states...

):

1.) Winter games somewhere in the Balkans (caption says Romanija,beginning of 1942-there were no GebJaeger units in Bosnia than,even the 700- divisons were not reformed into Jaegers);
2.) Crossing the mountain stream;
3.) "Banditen" receiving the rougher end,high in the sunny mountains...

Photos in color were very rare in Yugoslavia at that time.
Here are few - taken by US officer J.B.Alin (some of the first color photos in Yugoslavia).

I'm not sure if this the right place to post this photo, but here it goes anyway:

This photo shows an officer from one of our neighbor-countries, Romania,
talking to German Luftwaffe officer.
I don't know where it was taken, but the year is 1942.

This photo was cut-out from "Signal" by my grandfather during the war.
The reason - this Romanian officer looks exactly (100%) like him at that time !

Does anyone recognize him, maybe?

Piekalkiewicz again:

1.) Flak pounds partisans-KG "Fischer" in the vicinity of Tuzla again?
2.) They haven't reached the "Reichsgrenze"-column of Germans,allegedly in Istria in May 1945, with their captors.Note the pistol in hand of the leading partisan.
3.) Real good one: Partisan hands over the Yugoslav flag to the NZ tanker. Caption says Trieste-did the partisans make such contacts with the New Zealanders?
