hi, Varjag,

the case is, of course, HMSub H.49, the survivor George Oliver

as to the physical matter, the only one that occurs to me is that Oliver escaped from the sunken sub without a breathing apparatus.

the acoustic ?

Yes Polarbear - George William Oliver, a stoker in H 49's engineroom - was ''blown to the surface'' in an air-bubble that burst
it's escape hatch. He became the ''physical evidence'' that the submarine had been destroyed.
H 49 was caught in shallow water - only about 30-40 metres and did'nt stand a chance against the avalanche of depth-charges the German U-Jägers threw at it.
As U know, the Germans had no sonar - only hydrophones - and ''bombed'' more or less at random.
When Stoker Oliver appeared on the surface (not unconscious, as written - but with one burst eardrum and bleeding) - the
depth-charging stopped immediately. And - Oliver was picked up.

The ''acoustical'' - picked up a couple of hours later by the U-Jägers hydrophones - were two gunshots from down there....

We can draw our own conclusions.....

It is the Greek merchant ship Efthalia Mari, sunk by U-177 on August 6, 1943, in the Indian Ocean, after being spotted by the sub´s Focke Achgelis Fa-331 Bachstelze rotor kite (the only occasion in which such kite was successfully used for its intended purpose)
