I posted a question in a yahoo group about what rank was authorized to wear the ss crushers and this was the response I received:
The NCO field cap (or "crusher" cap) was introduced in 1938 for soldiers
holding the rank of SS-Unterscharführer and above. This is not to say that
they weren't "requisitioned" by junior ranks and there are documented
portrait style studio photographs showing junior enlisted men with
"borrowed" caps.

Although there were deviations to every regulation, authorized field use of
the crusher was limited to Unterscharführers and above. Officers who were
previous NCOs also kept their crushers to show their status and because of
its obvious jaunty appearance.

was this a hard and fast regulation? If so wearing the crusher below the rank of SS-Unterscharführer would not be authentic would it?

Mhh... I'm not sure about that, because there are really some photos that shows EM's with Crusher caps, so I wouldn't say it's unauthentic at all.
Because I found two photos of Waffen-SS soldier below Unterscharführer ranks (Sturmmann and a Schütze) wearing Crusher caps:

Ps. I know, these are just two photos beside of thousand and thousands of pictures that shows NCO's with crusher caps...

So, even though it wasn't "regulation" per say, EMs wore the crusher as well if they could get away with it?

There are several types and models of Peaked cap worn in the Army and SS... but I@ll concentrate on SS
There was the Feldmütze Alter art (Field Cap Old Style)
There was the Dienstmütze (Service Cap)
There was the Schirrmütze.

But to answer the question - Other Ranks wore the Feldmütze (Schiffchen) Which was a boat shaped cap
NCOs wore the Feldmütze für Unterführer Which was peaked and in its early form had a cloth peak. This practice was adopted from 1938 onwards.
Officers recieved a peaked Dienstmütze from 1935 but from 1937 it was manufactured with a field grey instead of an earth grey top. THis is the cap you commonly see old hand officers wearing in the field. It was carried over from their prewar service when many of them had been NCOs. This is because the cap was worn without cords by NCOs and with cords and sometimes aluminium piping by Officers.

It is a complicated question as there were so many unofficial permutations of cap and accoutrements..... But it is safe to say that anyone up to Rottenfuhrer would have been issued with and worn the Schiffchen. Also bear in mind that the caps in question were not worn as Service Caps but as Field caps..... There is a difference...... Hope this helps...

whel..her is my m/43 cap.

I think the pattern is more a sice 60 then 58,i learned the hard way,as i added 2 cm for my sice(60) ended with a sice 62

but after ripping it apart and then resew it it was perfect.
The tread is a little bit to light,the tread run out and i had to take another collor,,I Couldent stop!!!!

Very nice guide!. I think i found a pattern in a swing story magazine once. So i guess the pattern is not strictly a German military design.

if you buy a very old sewing machine for around £50 they are able to sew through leather.

I am having problems with printing out the pattern. When I print it, the image gets stretched I guess. Did you guys have to redraw the pattern by hand. I notice that, When I print it out, the mesurements are off. I notice this when I place a mesuring tape next to it (probably due to stretching in the printing process). Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to overcome it?

I used to have them on my old computer but that computer is dead.

Somebody please.... if you have them, UPLOAD THEM. I have access to some heavy sewing machines (finally) and want to make my own M42 caps with this pattern. (Slight modifications of course)
