i would love to try. two big problems though:
- i don't know what kind of stuff to use for the visor, or where i would get it
- i assume it would be some form of leather and i really have no idea how to sew through leather properly (without buying a $1000 sewing machine)

For the visor, you can re-use those one from old NVA cap. Sewn it by hand properly,it will avoid to screw your motor!

I'm going to try and make one. I'm going to take an east german peaked cap apart carefully and use the pieces to make a pattern. Then i will use a heavy piece of tooling leather for the beak. I will have to hand stitch the beak onto the cap useing my leather stitching needles. Unless you have a shoe makers or tent/awning makers sewing machine that is the only way i know of sewing on the beak is by hand

id suggest using a lighter weight leather than that...my original is maybe 1/8" thick patentleather...very thin..made to roll up...

I have the NVA visor...................but the peak is made of plastic while the nazi one is made of leather!!!!

It makes the reenactment a bit "off" from the real one............................(just a bit disappointment)

Germans got 2 kinds of peak: leather for crusher and vulcanized fibers(=plastic) for Schirmmütze

Yes the crushers also had wool covered beaks as well as the leather beaks. these caps are shown in the books Headgear of Hitlers Germany vol1&2 If interested I have both

Well i have worked up a pattern for the crusher cap. The pattern is a direct traceing of the actual cap i disassembled. I had to reduce the scans of the pattern to post here. If anyone wants the full size scan of the patterns please e-mail me at pzrwest@yahoo.com and i will send you the full size scans.
contructions:
Pipeing is 1/2"wide then folded in half
pipeing for the top is 32" plus 1/4" added to each end for seam allowance
pipeing for the top and bottom of the band is 23-1/2" plus 1/4" added to each end for seam allowance
band length is 23-1/2" plus 1/4" added to each end for seam allowance
the fieldgrey strip around the bottom is 23-1/2" plus 1/4" added to each end for seam allowances
the other seam allowances are on the patterns
