Roland-B & mikelshoen,

Welcome to the forum! I am sorry to hear about your recent loss but 91 is a long time to live and I hope to make to that age.

There is a book being written about PzJg Abt 559 which I saw the preveiw in 2008. Back then it was wonderful and only half way finished. It is still going and I believe the authors would love to get in contact with you. I think they will be able to provide you much infromation on your relatives as you can provide them.

Could you please email your contact details and I will pass it on to them.

Cheers

Scott

Scott: Thank you for your offer of help. I have removed my email address from this post to avoid spammers but would like to contact Roland Kopka to obtain a copy of Franz Kopka's manuscript. Is the book preview which you saw in 2008 the book on 559 in Belgium? I am assembling illustrations for the 22-pages of Paul Steinbrenner's memories which I compiled for my (and Paul's) descendants but I can produce copies for families of former members of Abt. 559, 43 or mechanized infantry batallion m.8 (panzer grenadiers) all three of which Paul S. served in. Sincerely, Michael Shoen

Thank you for the medal certificate post for your grandfather. My father in law joined Abt. 559 in June 1942 or earlier and stayed with it until he was badly wounded in Nov. 1944. Can you post any of your grandfather's photos? My email is [email protected]. Thank you. Michael Shoen

Ab dem 6.9.44 folgte der Einsatz 1.u.2.Kp/559 bei Antwerpen bei der 719.ID, GenMaj.Sievers, LXXXVIII.AK, Gen.d.Inf. Hans Reinhard, FschAOK 1 Generaloberst Student.

1.Kompanie Totalverlust 8 Jagdpanther Ist 6
2.Kompanie Totalverlust 5 Sturmgeschütze vermutlich Ist 9
3.Kompanie Totalverlust 10 Sturmgeschütze Ist 4

Regards yours Roland
If I'm reading this correctly there are 23 operational vehicles on Sept 8th 1944?
Do we know how many are still operational on Sept 17th?

According to "KG Walther and Panzer Brigade 107" at the end of 18th September 559 was down to 3 x Jagdpanther and a single StuG having lost most of the StuG in the counter attacks against "Joe's Bridge" in the previous several days and probably three that day. Sadly the book doesn't say how many vehicles were under repair.
