Torpedo Bunkers in Norway

Having visited TB Nordlandet and TB Hambara on our visit to Norway last weekend. We were puzzled as to how these worked.

What sort of mounting was the torpedo fired from? how fast did it come out to clear the wall?

I atttach a picture of Hambara, any info would be appreciated.

Hi Juha

Both fotos are taken in Flushing (Vlissingen) in Holland
there were 2 torpedotubes to protect the Westerschelde
Later in the war the batteries were changes to fire Spinne-
torpedos ( the topedos were guided by wire , at the end of
the torpedo there was a light so the operator could guide the
torpedo to the target)

I wonder how cold such a position would be for torpedo gunner in Norway where there would be a cold breeze from sea...

The 4 tubes used in Hambaara were taken from the aft battery on the German destroyer "Theodor Riedel" which was Heavily damaged in Trondheim.

The one used in Nordlandet was also a 4x53cm Battery, but of Dutch origin.

Bokfjord near Kirkenes was it build ??? it't still there ???

Just what I was looking for , I only found that it's was in buildingphase
but as your photo's show ot was ready and is still there , here 2 photo's
of the torpedobatterie Siebruniemi near Petsamo ( Fortification.ru ) .
The original plan was to builds the 2 torpedobatteries with 3 tubes , but
on the photo's from Kirkenes it looks there were 2 bunkers for 2 tubes ?

The bunker itself was most likely ready to use, but the entrance area was never completed. No doors or entrance defences in place, just a big hole going straight into the bunker. According to Fjørtofts book "Tyske kystfort i Norge" the torpedotubes never arrived in time to get installed!

Could it be possible that the "entrance" was to be the place were the third bunker
had to be build , because on the plan Petsamo and Kirkenes had each 3 tubes .

Hello Guillaume

First a welcome on this Forum , the torpedo bunkers at Pointe de Cornouaille and Fort Robert
are nearly identical in form a very long room with 2 small rooms in the back and in front the
torpedo tube's . In the place where the torpedo tube's were there is also a sort a emergency
door and on the other side a stair to the small command post .
On the other side of the Goulet there was also a torpedobattery on a "boat" a so called
"schwimmende torpedobatterie" .

In 1944 there were plans to equip the the vital harbours with so called "Spinnetorpedos"
they were wire guided torpedo's , there were plans for Lorient for sure .
In La Pallice the were plans to used the torpedotube's of the Z 23 and placed on a pontoon
and would be docked at the Amerika Mole .
