Re: Vehicles with unit markings
Björn, The tactical sign is for a Heavy Howitzer Battery not a Werfer unit. The unit sign might be for Armeekorps XVII which had a dark shield with a white cross on it.

Re: Vehicles with unit markings
Thanks for the reply! After checking XVVII AK's sign, I'm not convinced. As for the tac sign, it might not be clear in the pic, but there's a dot on the middle on the vertical line, which according to Christoph Awender's site designates a heavy werfer unit. A plain line is for a Batterie 15cm Kanone K18 (motZ). I'm still confused...

Re: Vehicles with unit markings
If the symbol indeed has a dot on its stem, it indicates a heavy "Mörser" (lit. Mortar, usually translated as Howitzer), halftracked-towed, battery. This could be equipped with 21cm, 35,5cm, or 35,5cm caliber weapons.
(I seem to be having some trouble seeing the dot...) Otherwise its a heavy gun ("Kanone") battery.

Björn, As Leo says the "dot" in the middle, and I believe there is a dot, indicates a heavy howitzer battery. It would only be by them adding the 21 and 18 as in Christoph's example that you could tie it down to a specific weapon.

Re: Vehicles with unit markings
I've done some research, and it has boiled down to probably be a vehicle from one of the following units: Pionier-Bataillon 9, Pionier-Bataillon 29, or Pionier-Bataillon 49. I haven't been able to find any unit signs used by them, and the sign doesn't match those of the divisions they were attached to.

Re: Vehicles with unit markings
Answering my own question... After checking other photos from the same lot, which show locations that made the parent division traceable, it appears like the SdKfz is from the Pionier-Bataillon 49, which belonged to the 10. Panzer-Division. A photo of the driver in tropical uniform confirms this, as the 10. PD was sent to Tunisia after a stint in Russia (also evident from some photos).B Hellqvist wrote:I've done some research, and it has boiled down to probably be a vehicle from one of the following units: Pionier-Bataillon 9, Pionier-Bataillon 29, or Pionier-Bataillon 49. 10 PD didn't go to Tunisia "after a stint in Russia" but after being rebuilt in France from May 1942 and being used in the occupation of Vichy.B Hellqvist wrote:Answering my own question... Re: Vehicles with unit markings
I suppose it is your English that makes you repeat that, no one is disputing that 10 PD went to Tunisia but the fact that you wanted them to go there straight from Russia.
