I've seen claim the Italians were aware of the current pattern. Conversely the Germans were unaware, or if aware failed to use the information. I suspect the British were aware, but not seen any evidence.LColombo wrote: ↑25 Apr 2019, 23:22This problem, however, should have been the same for both Italian and German submarines.Carl Schwamberger wrote: ↑25 Apr 2019, 19:01There are two contra currents running through the Gibraltar strait. A warm water current near the surface and a dense swift cold current below. Transiting the contact level between these could create problems for the sub.

I think this is Finzi refuelling Morosini (21 tons of oil), in March 1942.

The end of an Italian submersible.
For hours an Italian submersible was shadowed by a British destroyer in the central Mediterranean. Depth charges were dropped repeatedly; the submersible fought hard, but eventually conditions became so bad that the boat had no choice but to blow her tanks and surface. The hunt was over, only remained the kill with the support of a seaplane. The British destroyer having claimed her victory, stood by to rescue the crew of her victim.

Re: italian submarines
Hello tigre,
here we are on 30 september 1940, when the australian destroyer HMAS Stuart hunted the italian submarine Gondar (Gondar was embarking 3 SLC - siluri a lenta corsa - human torpedoes and ten I Flottiglia MAS crewmen).
The RAF flying boat was a Short Sunderland.

Canoga
