How did Reinhold Muchow die?

#1

Post by R.M. Schultz » 24 Oct 2005, 19:27

There seems to be some confusion among my sources about how Reinhold Muchow died. Just looking over a few sources, the Encyclopedia of the Third Reich (Christian Zentner and Friedemann Bedürftig, editors, Da Capo Press, New York City, 1997) says that he died in an automobile accident on 12 September, 1933, while Ronald Smelser says
Ronald Smelser, “Robert Ley : Hitler's Labor Front leader,” Berg, Oxford / New York City / Hamburg, 1988, p. 142 wrote: It was within the context of this purge [of the NSBO] that on September 12 Muchow was accidentally shot under rather suspicious circumstances.
Similarly, Ernst Henri mentions the suspicious nature of Muchow’s death
Ernst Henri, “Hitler over Europe,” Simon and Schuster, New York City, 1934, pp. 54-55 wrote:Thus Muchow, one of the first founders and most popular representative of the Nazi factory-cell organization (‘N.S.B.O.’), who enthusiastically demanded for this organization the supreme control in industry, then was very quickly reduced to a subordinate position (a large number of the local radical leaders of the N.S.B.O. were even interned in concentration camps), and finally, in mysterious circumstances, shot ‘by accident’ by another Nazi Leader.
Others, who would seem to have an interest in the matter (e.g. Timothy W. Mason,”Social Policy in the Third Reich : The Working Class and the ‘National Community’,” Berg, Oxford and New York City, 1993 or David Schoenbaum, “Hitler’s Social Revolution,” Doubleday & Co, New York City, 1966) never mention the suspicious nature Muchow’s death at all. Does anyone have more on this?

Hello R.M. Schultz,
That´s an interessting subject, but I can´t give you a clear answer. Strangely that nobody know what exactly happend to Muchow. :|

A newspaper article from 1933 says:

Translation:

"Shortly after a big conference of the NSBO and the DAF on the 12th September, 1933 a tragic accident is the end of his life..."

Another article from a different newspaper says:

Translation:

"Shortly after the arrangement, Muchow and some of his companions are on the way to the NSBO office, on the way it came from still unsettled causes to the use of a firearm, a shot freed itself and hit Muchow critically. He passed away at the accident place."

I´ve never heard the car accident varaint :?
If you are interessted I could post a letter from Dr. Goebbels to Dr. Ley. He´s writing about the tragic death of Muchow (Condolences). Also Walter Schuhmann wrote an article about the death Muchow.

First Picture: Propably the last picture of Reinhold Muchow. Taken on the 11th of September 1933, shortly after the NSBO meeting.
Second Picture: Burial of Reinhold Muchow

Thanx Koj ever so much for the information and cool pix!!!

Do you have the names and dates of the newspapers that you cite?

Yes, I am interested both in the letter from Dr. Goebbels as well as a summary of what Schuhmann says in his article. As I understand it, while Goebbels and Ley are both from the left wing of the party, they are not nearly so socialistic as either Schuhmann or Muchow, and so it would be interesting to know if Goebbels and Ley feel they are losing an ally or if they felt Muchow was an extremist.

Thanx again!

I hope your German is good ;D At the weekend I ´ll translate the article´s, or maybe another member can do this. Unfortunately I´ve no informations were the notes about muchow´s death appeared. These articles were cut out from a newspaper and were stucked on paper. I got them with many other NSBO and DAF related stuff (grouping of a NSBO leader).

Today only the Goebbels-letter (not enough time at the moment) and a letter I´ve found in my archive, I think it is from interesst:

"Lieber Pg. Dr. Ley!

September abends in Bacharch a.

press release ----------12th September, 1933--------------

The acting leader of the NSBO, leader of the organization velvet of the German working front, member of the small and big working convention, Reinhold Muchow, became on the 11th September in the evening in Bacharch a. Rhine as a result of a tragic accident seriously injured and on the 12th September, early 4 o'clock he died as cause of the injures.

Muchow visited together with some friends (also with SA Sturmbannfuehrer Willi Mähling) the Pfalzgrafenschaenke in Bacharch to have a dinner. After the dinner Mähling got up, Muchow sat opposite, to say goodbye.
When he buckled on his belt, the revolver on the belt hit against the table. A shot freed itself and hit Muchow in the upper part of his body. Mähling took the revolver before somebody could hinder him in it and gave himselves two shots in the head. He was immediately dead. Muchow was brought seriously injured in the Binger hospital where he has died.

Signed Walter Schuhmann, imperial representative of the NSBO

In my opinion Reinhold Muchow was killed......

Sorry for the bad English  maybe somebody can do a better translation.
best regards
Florian

And Mähling? Was he a genuine suicide or was he killed or what?

Very strange indeed....

the press release says very clearly, Muchow was short by accident and the person who was directly involved, Mähling, killed himself with 2 (!?) shots in his head. Mähling here was not mentioned anymore after this.

Obviously this a case full of puzzles.... I would see a chance to bring some light into this by trying to fing official police records. 2 people died, so there must have been at very least a police report.

One source says, muchow was killed when he came out of the office, the other source says, he was killed in a pub.

Strange, really...

Regards

GMB

R.M. Schultz,
GMB said it, it is really strange. At first the different articles about Muchow´s death. Is the story of the "press release" true, why should Mähling, if he kill´s Muchow accidentally, kill himself with two headshots?! Incomprehensibly !

Walter Schuhmann´s Obituary:

Walter Schuhmann"

Hello Phil Nix,
sorry for the late reply. Yes in my opinion the person on the far right is Albert Förster.

I see from left to right:

1. Walter Schuhmann at the left (with the black armband)
2. Dr. Robert Ley
3. Rudolf Schmeer
4. Albert Förster

Does he list a source on this in a footnote?

Infuriatingly for a supposed serious historian, no.
Typical.

I was just reading Joachim C. Fest's biography of Hitler and he says that Hitler got the link between the Jews and “interest slavery” from an anti-Semitic pamphlet by Feder, yet he supplies no source on this. To this day, despite repeated statements that Feder was anti-semitic, I have yet to turn up an actual writing or speech by Feder that even concerns the “Jewish Question.”
