Hans von Luck's "Panzer Commander" tells of his exploits in Normandy (Pegasus bridge, the famous Cagny incident, etc). Georg Grossjohann's "Five Years, Four Fronts" has some action in the south of France and in the Vosges. Wolf Zoepf's "Seven Days In January" is a very detailed account of his unit's fighting in the Vosges. Heinz-Günther Guderian's "From Normandy To the Ruhr" is another detailed account, and probably what you're looking for (haven't read it myself, tho).

Fair warning, I have the book and I've read it. It's less of a memoir, and more of an operational history. As Guderian was the Ia, it is very detailed. Extremely in depth! If you're interested in the 116th PD after D-Day, this is the book for you. However, if you're looking for something like Seven Days, or Black Edelweiss, don't read Guderian! It's a great book, but not a light read by any stretch of the imagination!

Well, I'm not sure if this helps, but the following is the bibliography for my book on the German defeat in Normandy which comes out late next year.

I'd particularly recommend: Kurt Meyer, Hubert Meyer, Ritgen, Ewald Klapdor, Luck, Poppel and Severloh.

Richard,

Your list is remarkable, thank you very much for all your trouble.
I'm researching just one incident on August 7th 1944 at Mortain for a more general story. Apparently Carell tells us that an aircraft crashed on the leading panzer during the Rgt' s move to Bereitstellungsraum. I now have a copy of that book on its way. Can you recommend any other particular book that covers that incident? I was under the impression that Das Reich V 1944 covers it, but Das Reich V is nothing if not elusive! All I hope to discover is what the aircraft was, and was it due to "friendly fire"?

I have looked at David Irving's book, Hess, which is on his site. I know that he was imprisoned for writing 'Holocaust Denial' or "Revisionism." Although I believe that he has been thoroughly discredited as an historian, is this the right way to go about dealing with Irving and his books? I found his book on Hess to be fascinating. There aren't many English-language books published on Hess's years in Britain, which is a legitimate topic of research. Since many British documents pertaining to WW2 were declassified in recent years, then why did they treat him so harshly? He lost his case in Britain, his reputation as an historian in tatters.

The attempt to silence him in free countries should be disturbing to anyone interested in freedom of speech issues. Certainly I can go to a public library and find "Mein Kampf" and "Justine" by DeSade, which I wouldn't wish to read unless I had to. His claims about the Holocaust were shown to be false. Shouldn't that alone have been sufficient?

In addition, I believe that the British censors destroyed copies of "Hitler's War" when it first appeared. These attacks on his writings only ensure that there will be an audience for them in the future.

I 'm not defending his claims per se, but merely acknowledging that once they begin to censor or destroy books, there will be no end to it. We should be very alarmed by such actions. Recently there was a "Preacher" in America who was going to burn the Quran in public, before he was admonished not to do so. Barmy.
