An individual case: A civilian with "Ritterkreuz"

Post by Dieter Zinke » 07 Dec 2005 13:43

Handelsschiffskapitän Paul Hellmann was awarded with the KC on 06.01.1944 as
Kapitän Blokadebrecher "Osorno"

on 01.11.1944 he was promoted to Leutnant zur See der Reserve.
1945 probably Oberleutnant zur See der Reserve

the pic with hat is from
http://presentations.uib.no/pls/portal/ ... _PART.show

the other as Handelsschiffkapitän comes from Biblio-Verlag

Here is another pic from the nafa-archiv about Kapitän Paul Hellmann!

Hi Dieter!
I didn`t know about this special case. Why would a civilian receive a military award? Did he have any kind of relation with the kriegsmarine? One last question: what does 'Blokadebrecher' mean? 'Osorno' reminds me a chilean volcano.

I want to explain you the "Abzeichen für Blockadebrecher". This was the only badge recognising the efforts of primarily civilian personnel, mainly the crews of merchant navy vessels, who, for example, broke successfully through an enemy blockade

Hello
Just a small correction : Dieter, what you have shown is the Hilfskreuzer badge which was awarded to merchant vessels (equipped with more or less weapons) to patrol and if possible attack the ennemy. One of the famest sailor "belonging" to Hilfskreuzer was Bernhard Rogge (who was bestowed both RK and Eichenlaub when operating with HSK "Atlantis")

The Blockadebrecher badge (breaking an ennemy blockade) is shown on this page :

Best regards
Denis

Denis, I should better go to sleep late in the evening instead of writing nonsense. You are right, of course. I have to be careful, many great (forum-)brothers watching me :P .
