They were cancelled as KC-holders by Veit Scherzer in his outstanding new book "Ritterkreuzträger 1939 - 1945".
Never legally awarded !!

I am particularly interested by the story of Karl-Hans Wittig who won the Knight-Cross on the Eastern Front in 1944 and was not an officer yet.He was one of the greatest soldier of the entire German Army. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Gefreiter Herbert Fries(1925-) was the most junior member of 1FJD to receive the RKT.

From Jean-Yves Nasse's green Devils!.
On 21 and 22 May 1944 to the east of Piedimonte,Gefr Fries, from 2./FschPzJägAbt 1,manning the gun of a Panther tank, slowed down the Allies who were trying to outflank what was left of 1FJD,knocking out 17 enemy tanks in the process.
