Hermann Goring Division and 44 Dot ????
Hi there, i wonder if anyone could help.
I have read on a number of occasions that some Units of the Hermann Goring Division where issued with 44 dot camo?
Does anyone have any good source material on this, or is it another story invented by re-enactors?
Any photos you could post would be very helpful.
Many thanks
Dan.

Not impossible, but fairly unlikely they wore the 44 dot. Some units of the HG Division were issued WSS camo smocks and helmet covers (predominantly in Plane Tree and Oakleaf patterns), but that was around 1942 and many of those were traded in for standard Luftwaffe ground smocks later. Also in Sicily and Italy, the HG were known to wear whatever they could "liberate" from stores and captured supplies, like Italian camouflage items. It's possible that some HG troops picked up a few 44 dot camo items in the redeployment from Italy to the Eastern Front, but I've never seen any photos to support it.
Some good references on the HG Division:
- Kurowski, Franz: "The History of the Fallschirm Panzerkorps Hermann Göring" ISBN 0-921991-25-8
- Otte, Alfred: "The HG Panzer Division" ISBN 0-88740-206-2
- Bender, Roger James et al: "Hermann Göring: From Regiment to Fallschirmpanzerkorps" ISBN 0-88740-473-1
The third title (by Bender) is probably the best of the three for researching stuff like uniforms and insignia.
